About Sika SikaShield Primer S-30 IN
SikaShield Primer S-30 IN is the surface primer that sits between your concrete and a bituminous waterproofing membrane. It is a single-component, ready-to-use liquid built around bitumen dissolved in an organic solvent, and its whole job is to make sure the membrane above it actually stays stuck. Straight out of the drum it is a thin, black, brushable liquid that wets a porous deck the way water wets a sponge, working into the pores and pulling the loose surface dust into a sealed, tacky film. Once that film hardens, a torch-on APP sheet melts onto it cleanly, and a self-adhesive SBS sheet grabs it firmly, rather than sitting on bare, chalky concrete where a bond would be hit or miss.
On Indian sites it earns its place because it is fast and forgiving. It is touch-dry in roughly four hours and hard-dry in about fourteen at normal roof-slab conditions, so a crew can prime in the morning and lay membrane the same day or the next. Coverage of 0.250 to 0.400 litre per square metre per coat is predictable enough to estimate drums against slab area before the job starts, and the 20-litre metal drum is a practical unit for a typical terrace or podium pour. The technical insight
The bond in a bituminous waterproofing system is only as good as the interface it forms on, and raw concrete is a poor interface: it is dusty, chemically alkaline and full of open pores that trap air. S-30 IN fixes that by being a low-viscosity, solvent-carried bitumen. Because it is thin, capillary action draws it down into the pore structure instead of bridging over it, so the primer anchors mechanically into the top few millimetres of the slab. As the volatile solvent flashes off (which is why it has a flash point of around 40 degrees Celsius and needs ventilation), it leaves behind a continuous, tacky bitumen film that is chemically the same family as the membrane’s own bitumen compound. When you then torch an APP sheet, its molten underside and the primer film soften together and fuse into one mass; with a self-adhesive SBS sheet, the primer’s residual tack gives the adhesive something aggressive to grip. The roughly 45 percent solids content is the reason the dried film has enough body to do this rather than drying to a dusty stain. The catch is the substrate has to be genuinely dry, under about 6 percent moisture, because trapped water later turns to vapour under a sealed membrane and lifts the whole build-up as blisters.

Selection & best practice
Start with a sound deck: the surface must be clean, sound and dry, with laitance, dust, oil and loose material removed and moisture below about 6 percent. Work only when both air and substrate are between +10 and +40 degrees Celsius, and keep flames and sparks away while the solvent is flashing off. Apply one even coat by brush, roller or spray at 0.250-0.400 litre per square metre, making sure the whole surface is wetted with no missed patches, and pay attention to upstands, drains and detailing where the membrane will terminate. On very porous or dusty substrates a second coat may be needed; allow the interval between coats before recoating. Critically, let the primer reach hard-dry before you torch or roll out any membrane, since a membrane laid onto primer that is still soft will trap solvent and weaken the bond. Prime only the area you can membrane the same working session so the tacky film does not collect fresh dust.
