Sika ViscoFlow-50 H
A polycarboxylate-ether superplasticiser engineered to hold slump over long haul times and hot weather, without the extra set delay that older retarders bring.
What is it?
A PCE (polycarboxylate ether) based high-range water-reducing admixture from Sika, formulated specifically to sustain workability rather than simply boost initial flow.
Where is it used?
Ready-mix plants, hot-weather pours, long-distance concrete transport, high-rise pumping and large rafts or industrial slabs where the mix must stay placeable for an extended window.
Why use it?
It keeps concrete flowing on site an hour or more after batching without holding back early strength gain, so slabs and columns can still be struck on schedule.
How is it applied?
Dosed at 0.2-2.0% by weight of cementitious content, added to the mixing water or into the mixer after 50-70% of the water is in. It is not applied to a surface; it is an in-mix additive.
About Sika ViscoFlow-50 H
Concrete does not fail on the truck; it fails at the pour when a mix that batched at a good slump arrives stiff and unplaceable. Sika ViscoFlow-50 H exists to close that gap. It is a polycarboxylate-ether superplasticiser, but the design intent is different from a conventional high-range water reducer: instead of chasing the highest possible slump at time zero, the polymer is tuned to release its dispersing action gradually, so the mix holds a usable consistency through transport, queuing and placement. For a Delhi NCR ready-mix operation battling traffic, or an infrastructure job where the batching plant sits far from the deck, that retention is the whole point.
The other half of the story is what it does not do. Traditional ways of buying workability time meant loading the mix with retarder, which pushed out setting and left crews waiting on strength before they could strike formwork or continue the cycle. ViscoFlow-50 H is built to give that extended open time without the accompanying retardation, so early strength development stays close to schedule. It is compatible with all common cements and cementitious blends, including fly ash and slag systems, which makes it a practical single admixture for plants running a range of grades. Space Arc Engineering supplies it as an authorised Sika channel partner across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, with mix-design and trial support so the dosage is dialled in against your actual materials rather than a generic table.
The technical insight
The behaviour comes from how the polycarboxylate backbone is structured. A PCE molecule works by adsorbing onto cement grains and holding them apart, partly through electrostatic charge and largely through the physical bulk of its side chains, which stops the particles from flocculating and frees up water that would otherwise be trapped between them. In ViscoFlow-50 H, not all of that dispersing capability is delivered up front. A portion of the polymer becomes active over time as the cement chemistry evolves in the first minutes and hours, so fresh adsorption sites keep getting occupied and the mix keeps re-dispersing itself. That staged release is why the slump curve stays flat for far longer than a standard superplasticiser, which typically peaks early and then drops away. Crucially, this is a dispersion mechanism, not a hydration-suppression one, so the cement’s own setting reactions are left largely undisturbed and early strength is preserved.
Where it is used
- Ready-mix concrete facing long haul distances or heavy site traffic between plant and pour
- Hot-weather concreting where rapid slump loss is otherwise a daily problem
- High-rise construction relying on sustained pumpability to reach upper floors
- Large rafts, mat foundations and industrial floor slabs that take time to place and finish
- Pumped commercial and infrastructure concrete needing a wide placement window
- Mass pours and continuous placements where a stiff arrival would force rejection
- Grades using fly ash or slag blends that benefit from steady, retained workability
- General structural concrete where consistent, controllable flow improves finish and reduces cold joints
Key advantages
- Extended slump-flow retention that keeps concrete placeable well beyond batching
- Achieves that open time without additional retardation, so early strength stays on schedule
- High water reduction improves strength and durability at the same workability
- Better cement dispersion produces smoother rheology and easier pumping
- Compatible with all cement types and with fly ash and slag blends
- Supports lower drying shrinkage and a denser, more durable matrix
- One admixture serves a range of grades, simplifying plant stock
- Backed by Sika’s IS 9103 and ASTM C494 Type G classification for specification confidence
Limitations & considerations
- It is a retention and water-reducing admixture, not an accelerator or a repair product; it does not speed setting
- Optimum dosage depends on your specific cement, blend and ambient temperature and must be established by trial, not assumed
- Overdosing can promote bleeding, segregation or excessive retention, so control at the plant matters
- Effective within roughly +10°C to +40°C conditions; performance outside this band should be confirmed
- As a liquid PCE it must be protected from direct sunlight and frost, and stored within its shelf life
- It is supplied in 255 kg drums or bulk, so it suits volume users rather than small one-off batches
Selection & best practice
Treat dosage as something to be found, not copied. Start with a trial mix using your actual cement and cementitious blend at the site’s expected temperature, sweep across the 0.2-2.0% range, and read both the initial slump and, more importantly, the slump held at 45, 60 and 90 minutes. Add ViscoFlow-50 H into the mixing water or introduce it into the mixer after 50-70% of the water has gone in, never onto dry cement, and give it adequate mixing time to disperse fully. Do not compensate for a poor mix by simply raising the dose; excess admixture can tip the mix into bleeding or segregation. Keep the product out of direct sun and away from frost, reseal part-used drums, and confirm it is within shelf life before a critical pour. Where a job also needs genuine set retardation, pair it with a compatible Sika retarder rather than overdosing the superplasticiser.

Industry use cases
Ready-Mix Concrete
Lets RMC plants guarantee arrival slump on long or traffic-bound deliveries, cutting rejected loads and site water additions that quietly weaken concrete.
High-Rise & Commercial
Sustains pumpability to upper floors and keeps large deck pours workable through placement and finishing, reducing cold joints.
Infrastructure
Suits bridges, mass foundations and continuous pours where plant-to-deck distance and pour duration demand a wide, reliable placement window.
Industrial Flooring & Rafts
Holds consistency across large slabs and mat foundations that take time to lay and level, giving finishers a controllable, even mix.
Hot-Weather Regions
In North Indian summers, counters the fast slump loss that otherwise forces early placement or extra water, keeping quality intact.

How we position Sika ViscoFlow-50 H
Within the Sika range, ViscoFlow-50 H is the retention-focused choice; where a project needs maximum early slump and water reduction rather than long open time, a Sika ViscoCrete high-range water reducer is the more direct fit, and both belong to the same PCE family so a plant can standardise on Sika chemistry. Space Arc pairs it with compatible Sika retarders and, on the durability side, with waterproofing and repair systems from our wider portfolio. Among the Fosroc admixture range we also supply, Auramix 420SR is the closest counterpart for extended-workability concrete without retardation, so a specifier already standardised on Fosroc has a genuine equivalent to hand.
Fosroc Auramix 420SR — Choose the Fosroc option when a project or plant is already standardised on Fosroc admixtures and needs the same long slump retention without retardation from within that brand family.
