Sika Rugasol S
A spray-applied, water-soluble surface retarder that lets you expose the natural colour and texture of aggregate without sandblasting, hacking or acid washing.
What is it?
A ready-to-use, water-soluble liquid surface retarder from Sika, tinted bright green, that delays the set of the surface mortar layer on fresh concrete so the aggregate underneath can be washed clean and exposed.
Where is it used?
Architectural exposed-aggregate slabs, precast panels, plaza decks, pavements and construction joints where a decorative finish or a roughened mechanical key is needed.
Why use it?
It replaces sandblasting, chipping and acid etching with a simple wash-off step, giving uniform aggregate exposure with far less labour, equipment and supervision.
How is it applied?
Spray a uniform coat with a low-pressure sprayer immediately after screeding once the concrete loses its sheen, cover to prevent drying, then wash off the retarded mortar with a hose and stiff broom after 12 to 14 hours.
About Sika Rugasol S
Exposed-aggregate concrete has always been a balancing act. The decorative stone has to be revealed cleanly, but the structural concrete below it must be left completely intact. Traditionally that meant sandblasting, mechanical scabbling or acid washing after the slab had hardened, all of which are slow, messy and easy to overdo. Sika Rugasol S takes a different route. It is a spray-applied, water-soluble liquid that is laid onto the fresh surface and chemically holds back only the thin skin of cement paste at the very top, while the concrete beneath continues to gain strength on its normal schedule. A few hours later that softened top layer simply washes away, leaving the aggregate standing proud.
For engineers and applicators across Delhi NCR and the wider Indian market, the appeal is control and predictability. The retarder is tinted a bright green so the applicator can actually see where it has and has not landed, which makes achieving an even coat far easier on a busy pour. There is no dilution, no batching and no specialist rig to hire, and because the exposure is done with water rather than acid, there is no corrosive residue to neutralise or dispose of. Space Arc Engineering supplies Sika Rugasol S as an authorised Sika channel partner, backing it with on-site guidance so precast yards and in-situ crews can dial in the finish they want on the first trial panel rather than the fifth.
The technical insight
The product works on the chemistry of cement hydration at the concrete surface. Ordinary Portland cement sets because the calcium silicate phases react with water to form a hardened C-S-H gel. Sika Rugasol S deposits a film that interferes with that reaction in the top millimetres of paste, keeping it soft and workable long after the rest of the section has stiffened. Crucially the effect is confined to the skin: the bulk concrete below the treated zone hydrates and gains strength normally, so structural performance is not compromised. The depth of exposure is a function of how the surface is finished and washed rather than of dose alone, which is why the data sheet stresses that all trowelling and floating must be completed before the retarder goes on. Any mechanical working after application drags the product to uneven depths and produces a patchy, irregular finish. Temperature is the other big lever. Heat drives hydration faster than the retarder can hold it back, so accelerating admixtures, heated or steam-cured concrete and hot weather all shorten and weaken the retarding action. On an Indian site that means the wash-off window and the depth of etch both move with the season, and trial panels under actual site conditions are the only reliable way to lock in a repeatable result.
Where it is used
- Architectural exposed-aggregate concrete slabs where the natural colour and texture of the stone is the design feature
- Precast facade panels and cladding produced in a casting yard with a consistent decorative finish
- Plaza decks, landscaped courtyards and pedestrian pavements calling for a slip-resistant textured surface
- Driveways, walkways and kerbs where a decorative and durable finish is wanted in a single pour
- Construction joints in dams and heavy civil work, where a roughened, laitance-free face improves the bond of the next lift
- Preparing a mechanical key on fresh concrete before a bonded screed, topping or render is applied
- Decorative hardstanding and entrance aprons for commercial and institutional projects
- Bridge fascia, retaining walls and staircases needing an aggregate-exposed architectural treatment
Key advantages
- Reveals the original colour and texture of the aggregate without sandblasting, so the architectural intent is preserved
- Removes the retarded mortar by simple washing, avoiding laborious hacking, chipping or blasting
- Water-based wash-off leaves no acid residue to neutralise or dispose of
- Ready to use straight from the pail with no dilution, mixing or batching
- Bright green tint makes uneven or missed areas obvious, helping achieve a uniform coat
- Applied with an ordinary low-pressure sprayer, so no expensive equipment or heavy supervision is needed
- Uniform coverage translates into uniform, repeatable aggregate exposure across a pour
- Compatible with the full range of Sika admixtures, simplifying use on Sika-based concrete
Limitations & considerations
- Effectiveness drops in hot weather, with heated or steam-cured concrete and with accelerating admixtures, all of which speed hydration past the retarder
- The wash-off window is time-critical: leave it too long and the mortar hardens, wash too early or too hard and you undercut the aggregate profile
- All floating and finishing must be finished before application, as any mechanical working afterwards causes uneven, irregular retardation
- The treated surface must be kept damp under wet burlap or plastic until washing, or it can dry out and lose the effect
- Results vary with mix design, temperature and site conditions, so a job-specific trial panel is essential before production
- It is a surface finishing aid only and does not add strength, waterproofing or chemical resistance to the concrete
Selection & best practice
Complete every finishing operation, floating and trowelling first, then apply Sika Rugasol S with a low-pressure spray immediately after screeding, as soon as the concrete has lost its surface sheen. Aim for one even, continuous coat and use the green tint as your guide to catch any thin or missed patches. For a bolder architectural look, seed extra aggregate into the surface and float it in before spraying. Immediately cover the treated area with wet burlap or plastic sheeting so it cannot dry out. After 12 to 14 hours, depending on ambient temperature, expose the aggregate with a low-pressure garden hose and a stiff broom, working gently so you do not undermine the stone. On a first job, and whenever the weather or mix changes, cast a trial panel under the same conditions to confirm the wash-off timing and depth of etch before committing to production. Any product left on formwork can be scrubbed off with water and a wire brush, and any material that never touched the concrete should be neutralised with cement slurry or a soda solution before disposal.

Industry use cases
Precast & Architectural Concrete
Casting yards use it to deliver consistent exposed-aggregate facade panels and cladding, with the green tint ensuring every panel gets an even coat and a repeatable finish.
Landscape & Urban Hardscape
Specifiers reach for it on plaza decks, courtyards and pedestrian pavements where an exposed-aggregate surface gives both a decorative look and useful slip resistance underfoot.
Dams & Heavy Civil
On horizontal construction joints in dams and mass concrete it strips the surface laitance to leave a clean, rough face that keys the next lift for a stronger bond.
Commercial & Institutional Flooring
Contractors use it on driveways, entrance aprons and walkways to produce a durable decorative finish in the same pour, avoiding a separate grinding or blasting operation.
Bonded Toppings & Renders
Where a screed, topping or render must bond to fresh concrete, it creates the roughened mechanical key needed for reliable adhesion without hand-scabbling.

How we position Sika Rugasol S
Sika Rugasol S is the go-to choice on Sika-based concrete, since it is compatible with the full Sika admixture range and integrates cleanly with a Sika-specified pour. If your concrete is being retarded within the mix for workability rather than at the surface, the complementary product is Sika Plastiment VZ-1, a chloride-free set-retarding admixture that is a set retarder for the mix, not a surface finish. Where the project is built around another brand, Space Arc also stocks a direct exposed-aggregate equivalent in MC-Crete 820 from MC-Bauchemie, which is worth naming when a specifier wants to keep the whole concrete package on a single non-Sika system. For horizontal pours in hot conditions, pairing Rugasol S with an evaporation retarder such as MC-Crete 620 helps protect the surface from plastic-shrinkage drying before the wash-off step.
