Sika Stabilizer-4 R IN
A biopolymer viscosity-modifying admixture that holds self-compacting, pumped and shotcrete mixes together, killing bleed and segregation even when water content runs high.
What is it?
A biopolymer-based viscosity modifying admixture (VMA) that increases the internal cohesion and stability of fresh concrete and mortar.
Where is it used?
Self-compacting concrete, pumped and shotcrete mixes, site-batched concrete, and low-fines or poorly graded mixes where bleeding and segregation are a risk.
Why use it?
It keeps the mix homogeneous, cuts bleed and segregation, and reduces sensitivity to swings in aggregate moisture and grading without stiffening the concrete.
How is it applied?
Dosed at 0.2-1.0% by weight of cement/binder, added at the batching plant to the wet mix after gauging water, and typically paired with a PCE superplasticiser.
About Sika Stabilizer-4 R IN
Sika Stabilizer-4 R IN is Sika’s biopolymer viscosity-modifying admixture, engineered for concrete that has to stay stable while it flows. In highly workable mixes, and especially in self-compacting concrete, the same fluidity that makes placing effortless also invites trouble: water rises to the surface as bleed, and coarse aggregate drifts downward as the paste separates. This VMA thickens the water phase just enough to hold the whole matrix together, so the mix travels, pumps and self-levels as one cohesive body rather than separating into layers.
For engineers and ready-mix producers across India, the real value is tolerance. Aggregate grading, fines content and sand moisture vary from pit to pit and load to load, and a mix designed on paper can misbehave on site. Because Sika Stabilizer-4 R IN raises the cohesion of the paste, it dampens the effect of those variations, giving more consistent, forgiving concrete from a plant that may not have laboratory-grade control over every input. It is a specialty admixture that solves a specific problem, rheology stability, and it is meant to work alongside a water reducer, not replace one.
The technical insight
The admixture works by modifying the rheology of the water phase rather than the cement chemistry. The biopolymer disperses in the mix water and builds a network of long-chain molecules that raises the viscosity and yield stress of the paste. That thicker, more cohesive fluid grips fine and coarse particles alike, so gravity can no longer pull heavy aggregate down or push bleed water up. Crucially, the effect is largely shear-thinning: under the energy of pumping or placing the mix still flows freely, then recovers its cohesion at rest, which is exactly why it suits SCC and long pump runs. Because it targets stability and not water demand, it is normally combined with a high-performance PCE superplasticiser such as SikaPlast or Sika ViscoCrete, which supply the flow, while the stabilizer supplies the discipline. It is compatible with all common cements and cementitious materials, and dosing it separately at the plant lets the producer tune fluidity and cohesion as two independent levers.
Where it is used
- Self-compacting concrete (SCC) requiring high flow with zero segregation
- Pumped concrete over long distances or to significant heights
- Shotcrete and sprayed-concrete applications
- Site-batched concrete where aggregate grading and moisture vary
- Low-fines or low-cement-content mixes prone to bleeding
- Concrete made with unfavourable or gap-graded aggregate curves
- Flowable mortars needing improved cohesion and reduced bleed
- Mixes where a high superplasticiser dose has raised the segregation risk
Key advantages
- Strongly increases internal cohesion, holding the mix together as one body
- Reduces bleeding, cutting surface water and the laitance it leaves behind
- Lowers the tendency to segregate even at higher water content
- Reduces sensitivity to variations in aggregate grading, fines and moisture
- Produces a more homogeneous mix from load to load
- Improves pumpability by keeping fluid mixes stable in the line
- Compatible with all cement types and most Sika admixtures
- Liquid form doses easily and separately at the batching plant
Limitations & considerations
- Not a water reducer or plasticiser; it must be paired with a superplasticiser to achieve flow
- Overdosing can make the mix sticky and harder to finish, so trials are essential
- Must be added to the wet mix after gauging water, never to the dry mix
- Actual dosage has to be finalised by site trials, not lifted from the datasheet
- Shelf life is only 6 months from production when stored correctly
- Requires dry storage between +10 C and +40 C, protected from sunlight and frost, and stirring before use
Selection & best practice
Add Sika Stabilizer-4 R IN at the batching plant into the cement-aggregate-sand mix after the gauging water and any moisture corrections, never into the dry mix. Dispense it separately from the superplasticiser (typically SikaPlast or Sika ViscoCrete) so flow and cohesion can be balanced independently. Start dosing at the low end of the 0.2-1.0% band and establish the working figure through site trials on the actual materials, since the right dose depends on the mix’s fines content and water demand. Stir the drum thoroughly before use, and where the product is combined with air-entrainers, retarders or accelerators, run a pre-trial to confirm compatibility. For major or unusual projects, involve Sika’s technical services on the mix design.

Industry use cases
Ready-Mix Concrete
Stabilises high-slump and SCC mixes at the plant so each truck delivers consistent, non-segregating concrete despite pit-to-pit aggregate variation.
High-Rise & Infrastructure
Keeps pumped concrete cohesive over long vertical and horizontal runs, reducing line blockages and blowouts on tall buildings and bridge decks.
Tunnelling & Slope Stabilisation
Improves the cohesion of shotcrete and sprayed-concrete mixes, cutting rebound and helping the material stay put on vertical and overhead surfaces.
Precast & Architectural Concrete
Delivers the void-free, blemish-free finish SCC needs in congested moulds by eliminating bleed lines and aggregate settlement.
Marine & Water-Retaining Works
Reduces bleed channels and laitance in dense, flowable mixes, supporting the low-permeability concrete these exposures demand.

How we position Sika Stabilizer-4 R IN
Within the Sika range, Stabilizer-4 R IN is the stability partner rather than the flow engine: pair it with a PCE superplasticiser such as SikaPlast or Sika ViscoCrete for the workability, and it supplies the cohesion. It sits comfortably alongside Sika Aer for air entrainment, Sika Retarder for extended working time, or Sika Rapid where early strength is needed, with a pre-trial for each combination. If your priority is simply reducing water and increasing strength rather than controlling segregation, a SikaPlast or ViscoCrete superplasticiser is the product to specify instead. Space Arc also supplies equivalent VMAs from other admixture houses we distribute, and our team can help you match the right stabiliser to your mix design, plant and application.
