What is it?

UltraTech Powergrout PGM is a ready-mixed, polymer-enriched cement mortar supplied as a grey powder in 25 kg bags. Site teams add water, load it into a grouting gun, and pump it directly into the void — no separate bonding coat, no hand-packing with a trowel.

Where is it used?

It’s specified wherever Mivan or conventional shuttering leaves tie-rod holes through RCC walls and slabs, in slit holes left by formwork ties, in brick masonry and natural stone joints, and in below-grade structures — basements, retaining walls, water tanks — where every penetration is a potential leak path.

Why use it?

Contractors reach for PGM because it goes on fast with a grouting gun instead of a trowel, sets without shrinking away from the substrate, and cures on its own without a curing compound or repeated water curing — which matters when a schedule has hundreds of tie-rod holes to close per floor.

How is it applied?

Mix the powder with roughly a quarter of its weight in clean water, stir for two to three minutes to a lump-free, pumpable consistency, and gun it into the pre-wetted hole within the one-hour pot life. Strike off flush and leave undisturbed to self-cure.

About UltraTech Powergrout PGM

Every Mivan or table-shuttering pour leaves its scars — hundreds of tie-rod holes punched clean through walls and slabs, each one a direct path for water once the shutters come off. UltraTech Powergrout PGM was built for exactly this moment: a polymer-modified, cement-based mortar formulated to be gunned into those holes rather than hand-packed, so a two-person crew can close out a floor’s worth of tie-rod holes in the time it would take to trowel-fill a fraction of them.

It’s supplied as a grey, ready-mixed powder in 25 kg bags — just add water on site, with no separate bonding agent or admixture to dose out. The polymer content is what lets the mortar hold its shape and adhesion in a vertical or overhead hole instead of slumping out before it sets, while the non-shrink formulation keeps the plug tight against the parent concrete as it cures. For engineers writing specifications, PGM sits within UltraTech’s wider Powergrout family alongside the NS1/NS2/NS3 high-strength precision grouts used under machine bases and column baseplates — PGM is the lighter-duty, small-void member of that family, sized for holes and joints rather than structural bearing gaps.

The technical insight

The mortar’s core trick is combining a fine, well-graded cementitious filler system with a polymer modifier and a plasticiser. The plasticiser keeps the mix flowable enough to pump through a grouting gun at a relatively low water content, which in turn keeps drying shrinkage low once the water demand — about a quarter of the powder’s weight — is met. The polymer redisperses in the mix water and forms a film through the cured matrix that improves adhesion to the parent concrete, brick, or stone, and gives the material enough cohesion to stand in a vertical hole without slumping before it sets — the same reason it needs no separate curing regime once placed. The trade-off worth flagging: this is a fine-aggregate mortar built for confined voids, not a flowable free-pour grout, so its finish and strength gain depend on getting it into a properly prepared, pre-wetted hole rather than a large open cavity.

Where it is used

  • Filling tie-rod holes left by Mivan and conventional shuttering in RCC walls, columns and slabs
  • Sealing slit holes and formwork-tie penetrations in basements, water tanks and retaining walls
  • Filling joints in brick masonry and natural stone cladding
  • Closing core-cut and drilled openings in concrete
  • Repair grouting around embedded fixtures and minor structural penetrations
  • Renovation and retrofit grouting where old tie-rod or scaffold-anchor holes need sealing
  • Patching small voids and blowholes on exposed concrete ahead of finishing
  • Sealing gaps around sanitary and plumbing sleeves passing through masonry or concrete

Key advantages

  • Gun-applied, not trowel-packed — cuts labour time sharply on high hole-count floors
  • Non-shrink, nil-shrinkage cure keeps the plug bonded tight to the parent concrete
  • Self-curing — no water curing or curing compound needed after placement
  • One-hour pot life at 27°C gives crews a workable window without excessive haste
  • Delivers a watertight result, which is the entire point in basements and water-retaining structures
  • Low wastage compared with trowel-applied mortars, since it’s pumped straight into the hole
  • Uniform, smooth finish that needs minimal touch-up before painting or plastering
  • Single-component, factory-proportioned — no on-site dosing of separate admixtures

Limitations & considerations

  • Not a structural free-flow grout — it isn’t meant for large voids under baseplates or machine bases; UltraTech’s own NS-series covers that job
  • One-hour pot life at 27°C shortens further in peak Indian summer site conditions, so batch sizes need to match the crew’s placing rate
  • Needs a grouting gun for proper application; hand-packing loses the speed advantage that’s the product’s main selling point
  • Pull-out and bond figures are quoted for thin sections around 3 mm; performance in unusually deep or oversized holes is best confirmed with the applicator
  • Like most cementitious grouts, it needs a sound, pre-wetted substrate — release-agent residue or dust in the hole will compromise bond

Selection & best practice

Chip back any loose concrete or laitance around the hole mouth and flush it out with water so the substrate is saturated but surface-dry before grouting — a bone-dry hole pulls water out of the mix too fast, and a hole with standing water dilutes it. Batch only what the crew can place inside the one-hour pot life; on a Delhi NCR summer afternoon that window shrinks further, so a few smaller batches beat one large mix that starts stiffening halfway through the pour. Feed the grouting gun steadily and work from the base of the hole upward to avoid trapping air pockets, then strike the surface flush before the material starts to set. Leave it undisturbed — no vibration, no premature loading — for the self-cure to develop, and shield freshly grouted faces from direct sun and wind for the first few hours so the surface doesn’t dry ahead of the core.

Frequently asked questions

Can Powergrout PGM be used to grout machine bases or column baseplates?
No — that’s a job for UltraTech’s NS-series precision grouts (NS1/NS2/NS3), which are free-flow, high-strength grouts designed for structural bearing gaps. PGM is a gun-grade mortar sized for holes and joints, not load-bearing voids.
How long does the mix stay workable once water is added?
About an hour at 27°C. In hotter site conditions that window narrows, so it’s best to mix in batches sized to what the crew can actually place, rather than one large batch.
Does the hole need to be dry before grouting?
No — the substrate should be pre-wetted and surface-dry, not bone dry and not holding standing water. A dry hole draws moisture out of the mix too fast; standing water dilutes it.
Is a curing compound needed after placement?
No, PGM is self-curing. It’s still good practice to shield freshly filled holes from direct sun and wind for the first few hours so the surface doesn’t dry out faster than the core.
What coverage should I plan for from one bag?
One 25 kg bag fills roughly 325-350 tie-rod holes of about 6 mm diameter and 300 mm depth. Actual yield varies with hole size, depth and on-site wastage.

How we position UltraTech Powergrout PGM

Within UltraTech’s own Powergrout range, PGM is the small-void specialist — pair it with Powergrout NS1/NS2/NS3 when the same job also has baseplates or machine foundations needing a high-strength free-flow grout, and with UltraTech’s waterproofing chemicals range where a basement or water tank needs membrane or coating protection beyond the tie-rod holes themselves. Space Arc also supplies Fosroc’s equivalent tie-rod grout for sites already standardised on the Fosroc Conbextra/Renderoc system, so the choice between the two brands usually comes down to what’s already on the approved vendor list rather than any real performance gap.

Preferred brand · Fosroc equivalent

Fosroc Fosroc Conbextra Tie Rod Grout — Fosroc’s direct equivalent — a single-component, thixotropic, non-shrink cementitious grout built for the same tie-rod-hole, core-cut and masonry-joint work as PGM. Choose it over PGM mainly when a site’s approved-vendor list or existing BOQ already runs on the Fosroc Conbextra/Renderoc system.
