Quick answers

UltraTech PowerGrout NS1 at a glance

The essentials specifiers and contractors ask first — answered straight from the product data, with links to go deeper.

What is it?

UltraTech PowerGrout NS1 is a single-component, cement-based, non-shrink and non-expanding precision grout enriched with special polymers, additives and selected fillers. You mix it with water only, and it can take well-graded coarse aggregate up to 20 mm for higher-volume pours.

Where is it used?

Use it to grout machine and equipment foundations, base and bearing plates, structural steel and precast columns, and anchor bolts and dowels that must carry high static and dynamic loads in plants, infrastructure and precast yards.

Why use it?

It is non-shrink and non-expanding for permanent, full-contact load transfer, is self-compacting and free-flowing with no vibration, shows nil bleeding and nil expansion, and develops high early and ultimate strength (up to 100 MPa) for heavy duty.

How is it applied?

Prepare and saturate the substrate, mix the powder with 16.5-17% water by weight to a lump-free flowable consistency, and pour from one side through a funnel/chute without vibration. Allow about 24 hours before loading. Refer to the UltraTech TDS for the method statement.

Key advantages

  • Non-shrink and non-expanding (nil expansion, nil bleeding per ASTM C 940) for permanent, full-contact bearing and reliable load transfer
  • Single-component, ready-to-mix system - only clean water is added, removing site batching errors
  • Self-compacting and free-flowing - fills under base plates and self-levels with no mechanical vibration
  • High early strength (about 40-45 MPa at 1 day) allows faster commissioning of equipment
  • Ultimate design strength up to 100 MPa (M100) for heavy static and dynamic machine loads
  • Economical for larger pours - well-graded coarse aggregate up to 20 mm can be blended in (about 1:1 by weight)

Overview

About UltraTech PowerGrout NS1

A plain-language overview of what UltraTech PowerGrout NS1 is, the problem it solves and how Space Arc Engineering positions it in a specification.

UltraTech PowerGrout NS1 is the high-strength member of UltraTech's PowerGrout family of cementitious precision grouts, intended for situations where a base plate or foundation must transfer heavy and often vibrating loads into the structure below with no gaps. It is a ready-to-use, single-component powder: you add only clean water, mix mechanically to a flowable consistency, and pour. Because it is non-shrink and non-expanding, it cures to fill the gap completely and stays in full contact with both the steel above and the concrete below, which is what allows reliable load transfer over the life of the equipment.

The grout is engineered to be self-compacting and free-flowing, so it travels under a base plate and self-levels without mechanical vibration, while exhibiting nil bleeding and nil expansion. Per the UltraTech technical data sheet it reaches roughly 40-45 MPa at 1 day and develops an ultimate compressive strength of up to 100 MPa (an M100 design strength), making it suitable for foundations that demand high early strength and the ability to be commissioned quickly.

NS1 is the precision grade of the range. For larger or deeper pours it is economical to blend in well-graded coarse aggregate up to 20 mm (typically one part aggregate to one part grout by weight), which extends yield and reduces heat and cost. Space Arc Engineering supplies UltraTech PowerGrout NS1 across India and can advise on grade selection, mock-up pours and method statements for your specific equipment and gap geometry.

How it works

The technical insight

Why UltraTech PowerGrout NS1 behaves the way it does — the mechanism behind the performance, in specifier-friendly terms.

Non-shrink cementitious grouts like PowerGrout NS1 work by balancing the natural drying and plastic shrinkage of cement with a controlled compensating mechanism, plus polymers and graded fillers that give cohesion and flow. The result is a grout that neither pulls away from the plate as it sets (which would leave a void and concentrate load on a few contact points) nor expands aggressively (which can stress anchor bolts and the surrounding concrete). The TDS reports nil measured expansion and nil bleeding under ASTM C 940, which is the practical signature of a grout that will hold full bearing contact under a machine.

Workability and strength are governed almost entirely by water content. NS1 is designed for a 16.5-17% water-to-powder ratio without aggregate (8-9% when blended with coarse aggregate), and adding water beyond this to 'make it flow easier' directly reduces strength and bond, which is why the datasheet warns against any extra water. Strength gain is rapid (about 40-45 MPa at 1 day, 65-75 at 3 days, 85-95 at 7 days, up to 100 at 28 days), supported by a high modulus of elasticity (about 53-55 GPa) and good pull-out bond (8-9 MPa at 28 days) so the hardened grout behaves stiffly and compatibly with the equipment it supports. Curing matters for external pours: internal grouting needs no water curing, but exposed work should be water-cured for about 3 days, and in hot/dry conditions, to develop these properties.

Limitations & considerations

Where UltraTech PowerGrout NS1 is not the right answer. Check these constraints from the manufacturer before specifying — using it outside its scope is the most common cause of failure.

  • Not for application when temperatures are likely to drop below 5 degrees C or exceed 50 degrees C; below 20 degrees C it needs an extended hardening period
  • It is a structural load-transfer grout, not a thin-bed, cosmetic, tile or screed product - very thin feather edges and decorative finishes are outside its scope
  • Where severe chemical attack, fuels/oils or very aggressive chloride exposure govern, an epoxy grout is usually the better choice; NS1 is a cementitious grout with only 'moderate' rapid chloride penetration
  • Workability and strength depend on strict water control (16.5-17%); adding extra water to ease flow, or vibrating the mix, will segregate it and reduce strength
  • Pot life is about 45 minutes - the grout must be mixed and placed continuously from one side within the working time, which demands planning for large pours

Selection & best practice

How to decide whether UltraTech PowerGrout NS1 fits your job — and how to apply it so the repair lasts.

Specify PowerGrout NS1 when you need a precision, high-strength (M100) cementitious grout under base plates, machine and turbine foundations or anchor bolts, and you want fast early strength for quick commissioning. Choose a more flowable PowerGrout grade (such as NS2/NS3) for deeper or longer flow paths or larger-volume pours, and step up to an epoxy grout only when chemical attack, oil/fuel exposure or extreme dynamic fatigue is the controlling factor. For pours thicker than the neat-grout range, plan to blend approved coarse aggregate up to 20 mm rather than over-thickening the neat grout.

Application best practice

  1. Prepare and roughen the concrete, remove oil, dust and laitance, and pre-saturate the substrate to a saturated-surface-dry condition before pouring; apply anti-corrosion coating to any exposed/renewed reinforcement
  2. Provide leak-tight shuttering with a head box on the pour side and a vent/escape on the far side so the grout flows fully under the plate and air can escape
  3. Mix mechanically with 16.5-17% water by weight to a lump-free flowable consistency, let it stand about 2 minutes to mature, remix, and never add extra water
  4. Pour continuously from one side only and let the grout's self-compacting flow carry it across; do not use mechanical vibrators, which cause segregation
  5. Place within the ~45-minute pot life and keep a continuous mix supply for large pours; for thicker sections blend well-graded aggregate up to 20 mm
  6. Water-cure exposed/external grout for about 3 days (and in hot, dry conditions); avoid placing when temperatures may fall below 5 degrees C or rise above 50 degrees C

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about specifying and sourcing UltraTech PowerGrout NS1.

What is UltraTech PowerGrout NS1?

It is a single-component, cement-based, non-shrink and non-expanding precision grout enriched with special polymers, additives and selected fillers. You mix it with water only; well-graded coarse aggregate up to 20 mm can be added for higher-volume pours.

Where is it typically used?

Precision grouting of heavy machinery and turbine foundation base plates, bearing plates, structural steel and precast columns, anchor bolts and dowels, plus high-strength precast manufacture and road/harbour/airport concrete repairs - anywhere high static and dynamic loads must be transferred.

What compressive strength does it achieve?

Per the UltraTech TDS, about 40-45 MPa at 1 day, 65-75 MPa at 3 days, 85-95 MPa at 7 days and up to 100 MPa (M100 design strength) at 28 days at a 16% water ratio. Request the TDS for full day-wise data.

Does it need vibration during placement?

No. It is self-compacting and free-flowing, so it fills voids and self-levels under base plates without mechanical vibration. In fact, external vibration causes segregation and should be avoided; pour continuously from one side only.

How much water should I add?

16.5-17% water by weight of powder without aggregate (8-9% when blended with coarse aggregate). Do not add extra water to ease flow - it reduces strength and bond. Let the mix stand about 2 minutes after mixing, then remix and place.

What are the temperature and curing requirements?

Do not place when temperatures may fall below 5 degrees C or exceed 50 degrees C; below 20 degrees C allow extended hardening. Internal grouting needs no water curing, but external work should be water-cured for about 3 days, and in hot, dry conditions.

What pack sizes and shelf life are available, and who supplies it in India?

It is available in 40 kg HDPE laminated bags and 25 kg WPP bags, with a 6-month shelf life from manufacture when stored cool and dry. Space Arc Engineering supplies UltraTech PowerGrout NS1 with technical support across India - contact +91 9999155255 or info@space-arc.com.
