STP ShaliEnamel
Hot-applied coal tar enamel that seals blast-cleaned steel pipe against soil-side corrosion, water ingress and cathodic disbondment for buried mains carrying water, gas, crude and effluent.
What is it?
A hot-pour coal tar enamel from STP, produced by digesting bituminous coal pitch with high-boiling coal tar distillate and inert mineral fillers, applied molten over primed steel pipe as an external anti-corrosion coating conforming to IS 10221, AWWA C-203 Type 1 and BS 4164.
Where is it used?
External surfaces of buried and submerged steel pipelines carrying potable water, gas, crude oil, effluent and other liquids across water-supply, oil-and-gas and industrial networks.
Why use it?
It builds a thick, high-resistivity dielectric jacket in a single hot application, resisting soil moisture, bacterial and root attack, backfill damage and cathodic disbondment over decades of service.
How is it applied?
The enamel is broken into small pieces, melted in a kettle below 260 C, flood-coated onto ShaliPrime-primed steel above 5 C, and immediately reinforced with an inner and outer glass wrap while still hot.
About STP ShaliEnamel
ShaliEnamel is STP’s hot-applied coal tar enamel for the external protection of steel pipelines, and it belongs to a coating class that has protected buried mains in India and abroad for the better part of a century. It is manufactured by digesting bituminous coal pitch in high-boiling coal tar distillate and blending in inert mineral fillers, which gives a dense, chemically stable mass that melts cleanly for application yet sets into a tough, largely impermeable film. The product is not painted on in thin coats like a liquid epoxy. It is heated to a flowing temperature, poured or flood-coated over a primed and blast-cleaned pipe, and wrapped with glass reinforcement in the same pass, producing a monolithic coal-tar-and-glass jacket of substantial build in one shot.
For Indian projects the appeal is straightforward. The system conforms to IS 10221, the national code of practice for coating and wrapping underground mild steel pipelines, and also meets AWWA C-203 Type 1 and BS 4164 Grade 105/8, so it is specifiable on water-authority, gas-utility and industrial tenders without argument. It carries no solvent, so film build is not limited by flash-off, and it develops very high electrical resistivity, which is exactly what a buried line needs to work alongside cathodic protection. Space Arc Engineering supplies ShaliEnamel with its companion ShaliPrime primer and glass wrap as a matched three-part system, along with applicator guidance, across Delhi NCR and Pan-India project sites.
The technical insight
Corrosion of a buried steel line is an electrochemical process: it needs an electrolyte path between the steel and the surrounding soil. Coal tar enamel defeats that in two ways at once. First, it is a genuine barrier. The coal-tar-plus-filler matrix has extremely low water and vapour permeability, so it starves the corrosion cell of the moisture and oxygen it needs. Second, and less obvious, it is a strong dielectric. Coal tar enamel develops very high electrical resistivity, which forces any stray current to stay in the pipe rather than leak to soil, and it plays cooperatively with an impressed-current or sacrificial cathodic-protection system instead of shielding it. The hot-applied glass wrap is not decoration either; the inner and outer wraps reinforce the still-molten enamel, control thickness, and give the jacket the mechanical toughness to survive lowering-in and backfill without the brittle cracking that a thick unreinforced coating would suffer. Because the enamel is chemically inert coal-tar pitch rather than a cured polymer, it also resists the biological and chemical attack that kills organic coatings underground: soil bacteria, marine organisms, root growth and petroleum contact.
Where it is used
- External anti-corrosion coating of buried steel water-supply and trunk mains
- Coating of cross-country and distribution gas pipelines
- Protection of crude-oil and product pipelines against soil-side corrosion
- Coating of steel lines carrying industrial effluent and process liquids
- Submerged and marine steel pipeline protection where root, bacterial and organism attack is a risk
- Field and yard coating of blast-cleaned steel pipe as part of an enamel-plus-glass-wrap system
- Rehabilitation and recoating of exposed or damaged sections on existing coal-tar-coated lines
- Corrosion protection working in tandem with impressed-current or sacrificial cathodic protection
Key advantages
- Conforms to IS 10221, AWWA C-203 Type 1 and BS 4164, so it is directly specifiable on Indian utility tenders
- High build achieved in a single hot application, unlike thin multi-coat liquid systems
- Very high electrical resistivity that complements rather than shields cathodic protection
- Solvent-free, so film thickness is not limited by flash-off and there is no solvent entrapment
- Excellent adhesion to blast-cleaned steel and good flexibility for handling and backfill
- Chemically stable and resistant to soil bacteria, marine organisms, root growth and petroleum products
- Proven, long-service-life technology with decades of field performance on buried mains
- Supplied as a matched system with ShaliPrime primer and glass wrap for consistent results
Limitations & considerations
- Hot-applied only: it needs a heating kettle, temperature control and trained applicators, not a brush-and-go job
- Once at application temperature the melt must be used within about 3 hours or it goes off-specification
- Kettle temperature must never exceed 260 C, and overheating degrades the enamel irreversibly
- It is an external pipeline coating, not a general concrete-surface or potable-contact lining
- Coal tar handling requires fume, heat and skin precautions on site and is subject to local regulation
- Application must stop in wet conditions or when steel is at or below 5 C, which constrains monsoon and winter-night work
Selection & best practice
Start with the steel, not the enamel. The pipe must be blast-cleaned and then primed with ShaliPrime, and it must be primed only when the metal temperature is above 5 C and the surface is free of dust, oil and moisture, so a well-timed prime is what governs long-term adhesion. Break the enamel into small pieces of roughly 1 to 5 kg, fill the kettle to about 75% of capacity and begin heating with the agitator running, adding fresh charge slowly as material melts to avoid local overheating at the bottom. Never take the kettle above 260 C, and treat 3 hours at application temperature as the working limit; enamel held longer than that, or reheated by more than about 10% fresh charge on old, should be discarded. Flood-coat the primed pipe and lay in the inner and outer glass wrap while the enamel is still molten so the jacket cures as one body. If a plant breakdown interrupts the run, drop the melt to 150 C or lower with the agitator on for no more than about 5 hours rather than holding it hot. Consume any reheated enamel within 3 hours of reaching temperature, and store drums in a cool, dry, shaded place away from heat.

How we position STP ShaliEnamel
ShaliEnamel is the right specification when the job is external corrosion protection of buried or submerged steel pipe to IS 10221 or AWWA C-203 and a proven hot-applied coal-tar system is called for. It is deployed as a system with its STP stablemates: ShaliPrime as the primer and STP glass tissue inner and outer wrap as the reinforcement, and it sits alongside STP’s cold-applied PipeWrap CT 221 coal tar tape for tie-ins, girth welds and field joints where a heating kettle is impractical. Where a client instead wants a liquid, cold-applied external pipeline coating, we can position a modern polyurethane or epoxy alternative from our other brands rather than force a hot-applied product onto a job that cannot support kettle work. For below-grade concrete and structure waterproofing, which coal tar enamel does not address, we route buyers to our Fosroc and Dr. Fixit membrane ranges. Space Arc supplies and advises on the full assembly Pan-India from Delhi NCR.
Fosroc Nitoproof 600 — A specifier working below grade on concrete rather than steel pipe should choose Fosroc Nitoproof 600, a cold-applied pitch-modified polyurethane waterproofing membrane, since ShaliEnamel is a hot-applied external steel-pipe coating and does not serve concrete waterproofing.
