STP ShaliSeal CL BT
Hot-poured, single-component bituminous joint sealant for canal linings and water-retaining concrete structures, conforming to IS 13143-1991.
What is it?
A single-component, non-sagging bituminous compound that is melted and poured hot into the joints of concrete canal linings and similar water-retaining structures.
Where is it used?
Expansion and construction joints in cast-in-situ and precast concrete canal linings, irrigation channels and flagstone paving across Delhi NCR and Pan-India projects.
Why use it?
It stays watertight under sustained hydraulic head, flexes with seasonal joint movement, and resists sunlight, rain and cyclic temperature swings without cracking or flowing out.
How is it applied?
Melt the 20 kg drum to 180-200C, prime the cleaned joint with ShaliTex Primer, then pour the molten sealant into the joint to the designed depth.
About STP ShaliSeal CL BT
STP ShaliSeal CL BT is a purpose-built bituminous sealant for the joints of concrete canal linings, where the sealant has to hold back water for years while the concrete panels expand, contract and shift with the seasons. It is a single-component, hot-applied compound: the material arrives solid in a drum, is melted on site and poured into the prepared joint, where it cools into a tough yet flexible black seal. Unlike gun-grade sealants meant for building movement joints, CL BT is formulated specifically for the long, repetitive linear joints found in irrigation infrastructure, and it conforms to IS 13143-1991, the Indian Standard for bitumen-based joint-filling compounds used in this kind of hydraulic work.
For contractors and irrigation-department engineers, the appeal is durability under real field conditions. Canals sit in the open, so the seal must survive intense summer sun, monsoon rain and the daily thermal cycling that opens and closes every joint. ShaliSeal CL BT is engineered with a high softening point of over 85C so it does not slump or run in peak Indian heat, while retaining enough low-temperature extensibility to stretch across an opening joint without splitting. Applied correctly over a primed substrate, it bonds well to concrete, brick and precast slabs and keeps the lining watertight against the maximum hydraulic head the joint is likely to face.
The technical insight
The performance of CL BT comes from balancing two opposing demands in one bitumen blend: it must stay firmly in place in hot weather, yet remain flexible enough to move with the joint in cold weather. The high softening point (above 85C per IS:1205) and the controlled penetration of 15-30 dmm give it low susceptibility to flow, so it does not sag out of vertical or sloped canal joints under the sun. At the other end, a minimum extensibility of 6 mm at 0C (IS:1834, Appendix C) means the cooled seal can accommodate the opening and closing of the joint through thermal cycling without cracking or debonding. Because it is poured hot at 180-200C, the molten compound wets into the primed joint faces and, on cooling, forms an intimate, gap-free bond that blocks water ingress. A very low water content (max 0.5%) and a flash point above 200C keep the melt stable during heating, so the material fills cleanly rather than frothing or trapping voids that would later become leak paths.
Where it is used
- Sealing expansion and contraction joints in cast-in-situ concrete canal linings
- Joint sealing of precast concrete canal slabs and channel panels
- Waterproofing joints in lined irrigation channels and distributaries
- Sealing joints in flagstone paving and hard-standing over water-retaining works
- Rehabilitation and resealing of failed joints in existing concrete canals
- Joint treatment in concrete linings subject to sustained hydraulic head
- Sealing joints between brick and precast slab elements in water conveyance structures
- Preventing seepage loss at panel joints in irrigation and water-transfer infrastructure
Key advantages
- Withstands joint expansion and contraction without cracking, thanks to controlled low-temperature extensibility
- Provides a watertight seal even under the maximum hydraulic head the joint is likely to see
- High softening point above 85C means low susceptibility to flow and slumping in hot weather
- Good adhesion to concrete, brick and precast slab substrates when primed correctly
- Resistant to sunlight, rain and cyclic temperature changes for long outdoor service
- Single-component and hot-poured, so there is no on-site mixing ratio to get wrong
- Resists ingress of foreign matter into the joint once set
- Conforms to IS 13143-1991, giving specifiers a recognised standard to reference
Limitations & considerations
- Must be heated to 180-200C before use, so it needs melting equipment and trained handling on site
- Overheating causes frothing and quality loss, so temperature control during melting is essential
- It is a hot-pour grade, not a gun-applied sealant, so it is unsuited to vertical building movement joints or facade work
- Requires ShaliTex Primer on cleaned, dry joint faces to achieve reliable adhesion
- Black bituminous finish only, with no colour options for architectural or decorative joints
- Shelf life is 12 months and the product must be stored out of direct sunlight and heat to avoid premature deterioration
Selection & best practice
Start by cleaning the joint thoroughly: remove all dust, laitance, oil, grease and loose particles with a jet of dry compressed air and make sure the faces are dry before priming. Apply ShaliTex Primer to the cleaned joint and allow it to become tacky. Cut open the 20 kg drum and heat the compound to 180-200C with slow, continuous stirring for uniformity; a full drum typically takes 2-3 hours to melt completely with a hand stirrer. Do not overheat, as this causes frothing; if bubbles appear, hold the temperature around 180C with slow stirring until they disappear. Pour the molten sealant into the primed joint to the designed depth in one continuous operation for a homogeneous seal. Estimate quantity using the STP formula 800/(W x D) = running metres per kg, where W is joint width and D is joint depth in mm, and allow 5-20% for site wastage. Work within the specified temperature window and avoid application onto damp joints.

How we position STP ShaliSeal CL BT
ShaliSeal CL BT sits in STP’s bituminous sealant family alongside ShaliSeal BT SB, a cold-applied, solvent-based rubberised bituminous sealant better suited to road, bridge and general construction joints where hot-pouring is impractical, and ShaliSeal BT MJ for metal-to-metal joints. It pairs naturally with ShaliTex Primer, which is required for adhesion. Where a project calls for a cold-applied, chemically curing seal in a water-retaining structure rather than a hot-poured bitumen, Space Arc can also supply Fosroc’s polysulphide range as an alternative specification. As an authorised distributor for STP, Fosroc, Dr. Fixit and other leading brands, Space Arc can help engineers match the right sealant chemistry to the exposure, movement and application method their canal or joint actually demands.
Fosroc Thioflex 600 — A specifier may choose this cold-applied, two-part polysulphide sealant when a canal or water-retaining joint needs a chemically curing, gun- or pour-grade seal without on-site hot melting.
