What is it?

A penetrating, water-based lithium silicate solution that reacts with free lime inside concrete to harden, densify and dust-proof the slab from within – not a coating or topping.

Where is it used?

Power-trowelled industrial concrete floors in warehouses, factories, distribution centres, platforms, car parks, workshops and corridors, on both new and old slabs.

Why use it?

It permanently hardens the surface (+45% abrasion resistance per ASTM C779), eliminates dusting, raises chemical and stain resistance, and adds a satin sheen – in a single, zero-build, low-VOC application.

How is it applied?

Sprayed onto a clean, saturated-surface-dry slab with a low-pressure high-volume sprayer, kept wet for 20 minutes, excess removed, then left to dry 1-2 hours before traffic.

About Fosroc Nitoflor LH

Fosroc Nitoflor LH is a high-performance, lithium-silicate-based liquid floor hardener, strengthener and densifier formulated for industrial concrete floors. Unlike a screed or an epoxy coating that sits on top of the slab, Nitoflor LH is a reactive chemical treatment that soaks into the open micro-channels of cured concrete and converts free lime – the soft, dust-shedding by-product of incomplete cement hydration – into a hard, insoluble crystalline material. The result is a denser, tougher, more wear-resistant top layer that is integral to the slab itself, with no measurable thickness added and no risk of delamination.

The product is positioned a clear step above traditional sodium- and potassium-silicate hardeners. Because the active agent is lithium, the molecules are smaller and penetrate deeper, and lithium is the element known to mitigate damaging alkali-silica reactivity (ASR) rather than feed it – a genuine durability advantage on Indian aggregates that can be reactive. Nitoflor LH is supplied ready to use as a single penetrating application; once it has reacted, the densification is permanent and does not wash out or wear off the way a film-forming sealer can.

For owners and facility managers, the practical payoff is a cleaner, harder, lower-maintenance floor. The treatment dust-proofs the surface, so warehouses and food-handling areas stop generating the fine cementitious dust that contaminates stock and clogs racking; it tightens the surface against oil, grease and water penetration; and routine scrubbing with a high-pH detergent actually builds a satin sheen over time. It is water-based, non-flammable, contains no solvents and effectively zero VOC, and is safe enough to use in food preparation areas – which makes it well suited to occupied or phased projects where shutdown windows are tight.

Nitoflor LH is most relevant where a polished, dust-free, hard-wearing concrete floor is wanted at sensible cost, and where the existing slab is sound but soft or dusting. It is not a repair mortar and it will not level or re-profile a damaged floor; for those situations Fosroc’s cementitious and epoxy floor toppings are the correct route, and Nitoflor LH can be used to harden the wearing surface afterwards.

The technical insight

The chemistry is the whole story. Concrete that dusts or wears badly does so because the surface is rich in unreacted free calcium hydroxide (free lime). Nitoflor LH delivers lithium silicate deep into the capillary network, where it reacts with that free lime to form additional calcium-silicate-hydrate (C-S-H) – the same binding gel that gives concrete its strength. This pozzolanic-type reaction fills voids, densifies the matrix and locks the surface together, which is why the official data shows a 45% improvement in abrasion resistance (ASTM C779), a 46% gain on the hardening/compressive test (ASTM C39 at 24 hours) and a 40% rise on the Moh’s hardness scale. The lithium ion is the key differentiator: it is small enough to migrate further into dense, power-trowelled slabs than sodium or potassium silicates, and crucially it does not promote alkali-silica reaction – a real consideration with reactive aggregates common across parts of India. Because the reaction depends on free lime being present, the treatment performs best on ordinary OPC and PPC concretes; on high-pozzolanic-content cements the free lime can be too low for full reaction, and an alternative Nitoflor topping may be preferable.

Where it is used

  • Surface hardening and densification of new and existing power-trowelled industrial concrete floors
  • Dust-proofing of warehouse, factory and logistics floors to eliminate cementitious dusting
  • Hardening of car park decks, loading platforms and circulation corridors subject to abrasion
  • Treatment of food-processing and pharmaceutical floors where a non-toxic, low-VOC, breathable surface is required
  • Preparing a hardened, sealed substrate prior to overcoating with Nitoflor epoxy floor coatings or line-marking paint
  • Upgrading soft or dusting older slabs to extend service life without removing or re-screeding the floor

Key advantages

  • Superior performance to conventional sodium- and potassium-silicate hardeners due to deeper-penetrating lithium chemistry
  • Provides ASR protection – lithium mitigates damaging alkali-silica reactivity rather than aggravating it
  • Permanent, integral hardening in a single penetrating application with zero added thickness and no delamination risk
  • Verified performance gains: +45% abrasion resistance (ASTM C779), +46% hardening (ASTM C39 @ 24 hrs), +40% Moh’s hardness
  • Dust-proofs the slab, creating a cleaner, healthier working environment and reducing stock contamination
  • Water-based, non-flammable, non-toxic, solvent-free with effectively nil VOC – safe for food-preparation areas and occupied buildings
  • Improves resistance to oil, grease, water and staining, and develops a satin sheen with routine maintenance
  • Allows the concrete to breathe and is compatible with subsequent Nitoflor epoxy overcoating or striping paints after 24 hours

Limitations & considerations

  • Only hardens and densifies – it does not level, repair, fill cracks or re-profile a damaged or uneven slab
  • Performance depends on free lime in the concrete; high-pozzolanic-content cements may have too little free lime for full reaction
  • Effective on power-trowelled / dense floated finishes; coverage drops sharply and results are reduced on rough or textured surfaces
  • Not a decorative colour finish – it imparts a satin sheen but cannot deliver pigmented or heavy-duty topping aesthetics
  • Requires thorough surface preparation (degreasing, removal of curing compounds/laitance) and a saturated-surface-dry slab for proper penetration
  • Does not provide a high-build chemical or impact barrier; aggressive chemical exposure or heavy point loading still needs an epoxy or PU topping
  • A light lithium residue can form as the floor dries and must be swept or buffed off

Selection & best practice

Mechanically grind or scarify and degrease the slab to remove curing compounds, form-release oils, laitance and dust, then wash with a high-pH detergent and rinse thoroughly. Saturate the surface with water and remove all standing water so the slab is damp but not flooded before application. Apply Nitoflor LH with a low-pressure, high-volume sprayer to a uniform glistening sheen, working in lambswool roller and keeping the surface wet for at least 20 minutes; reapply to any areas that dry out within that window. After 20 minutes squeegee or sweep off the excess, allow the floor to dry for 1-2 hours, and remove any lithium residue with a stiff broom or power sweeper. For maximum shine let the floor dry overnight and buff with a high-speed machine using a black pad followed by a red pad. Where an epoxy overcoat or line-marking is planned, allow at least 24 hours before overcoating. Always confirm cement type (avoid high-pozzolanic mixes), trial an area first, and follow the current Fosroc TDS and SDS.

Upgrades existing soft or dusting concrete in retail backrooms and storage areas to a clean, low-maintenance, hard-wearing floor without a full re-lay.

Pre-coating Preparation

Used as a densifying primer step on sound slabs before applying Nitoflor epoxy floor coatings or line-marking, giving a harder, less porous substrate to build on.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Nitoflor LH a coating or a hardener?
It is a penetrating chemical hardener and densifier, not a coating. It soaks into the concrete and reacts with free lime to form hard crystalline material inside the slab, so it adds no measurable thickness and cannot peel or delaminate the way a surface film can. If you need a built-up wearing or chemical-resistant layer, an epoxy or PU topping is the right product – and Nitoflor LH can be used underneath it.
How much area does one litre cover?
Spray applied, Nitoflor LH covers about 10-12 m² per litre on power-trowelled (dense, smooth) concrete. On textured, broom-finished or porous surfaces the coverage is significantly lower because the slab drinks more material, so always allow extra and trial an area to confirm your project rate.
How is Nitoflor LH different from sodium silicate hardeners?
It uses lithium silicate instead of sodium or potassium silicate. The lithium ion is smaller, so it penetrates deeper into dense slabs, and lithium actually mitigates alkali-silica reaction (ASR) rather than contributing to it. The data sheet records measurable performance gains – around 45% better abrasion resistance and 40% higher Moh’s hardness over an untreated control.
Can it be applied to an old, existing concrete floor?
Yes. Nitoflor LH is designed for both new and existing concrete. The slab must be sound, then thoroughly cleaned of curing compounds, oils, laitance and dust, lightly ground if needed, and saturated with water (surface-damp, no standing water) before spraying. It will harden and dust-proof an old soft slab, but it cannot repair cracks, spalling or level an uneven floor.
Is it safe for food-preparation and occupied areas?
Yes. It is a water-based, non-flammable, non-toxic formulation with no solvents and nil VOC, is not carcinogenic or mutagenic, is odourless during and after application, and the manufacturer states it may be used in food-preparation areas. That makes it suitable for occupied buildings and phased works. Standard PPE and the current SDS should still be followed during application.
Can the treated floor be painted or epoxy coated afterwards?
Yes. Floors treated with Nitoflor LH can be sealed or overcoated with Nitoflor epoxy floor coatings after 24 hours, and can be painted for line-marking or striping with no chemical incompatibility. This makes it a useful densifying base coat when a coated or zoned floor is planned later.

How we position Fosroc Nitoflor LH

Within the Fosroc industrial flooring range, Nitoflor LH is the lithium-silicate hardener/densifier of choice for dust-proofing and strengthening power-trowelled slabs. It sits alongside, and is often confused with, the Nitoflor Lithurin family (Lithurin, Lithurin E, Lithurin M, Lithurin 2) – which are also lithium-based densifier/sealer systems – and the sacrificial dry-shake metallic and non-metallic toppings such as Nitoflor Hardtop, Nitoflor Quartztop and Nitoflor Colortop that are broadcast into wet concrete for heavy abrasion. Where chemical or impact duty exceeds what a hardener can deliver, the correct Fosroc routes are the epoxy floor coatings (Nitoflor FC range) or self-levelling epoxy/PU screeds, for which Nitoflor LH can act as a densifying preparation. Against the wider Indian market, credible alternatives in the densifier category include Sika (Sikafloor CureHard / ProSeal lithium densifiers), MBS (MYK / BASF Master Builders Solutions MasterTop and MasterKure densifier lines), STP and other speciality flooring suppliers; Dr. Fixit is better known for waterproofing and is a weaker fit for chemical floor hardening specifically. Nitoflor LH earns specification on the strength of genuine ASTM-referenced performance data, deep-penetrating lithium chemistry with ASR protection, and Fosroc’s nationwide technical support. As an authorised Fosroc distributor and applicator across Delhi NCR and Pan-India, Space Arc Engineering supplies Nitoflor LH in 20 and 200 litre packs and can advise on cement compatibility, surface preparation and overcoating to ensure the specified performance is actually achieved on site.
