Nitocote VF — Vapour Barrier Epoxy Coating for Concrete Floors and Walls

Nitocote VF

Vapour Barrier Epoxy Coating for Concrete Floors and Walls

Authorized Project Distributor — Fosroc India | Space Arc Engineering, Ghaziabad

Product Overview

Nitocote VF is a two-component, solvent-free, very low viscosity epoxy coating used as a vapour barrier and surface sealer on concrete floors prior to the application of moisture-sensitive floor finishes such as epoxy and PU floor coatings, resilient floor tiles (vinyl, rubber), adhesive-fixed floor coverings, and raised access floor systems. Concrete slabs — particularly ground-bearing slabs — continuously emit moisture vapour as residual construction water evaporates from within the slab over months or years. This moisture vapour, when trapped beneath a low-permeability floor finish, can cause osmotic blistering of epoxy coatings, adhesive failure of bonded tiles, and deterioration of resilient flooring. Nitocote VF, applied in one or two coats as a primer system, penetrates the surface of the concrete and cures to form a low-permeability epoxy barrier that limits the upward transmission of moisture vapour to a level compatible with the planned floor finish. Space Arc Engineering distributes Nitocote VF for pharmaceutical, food processing, data centre, and industrial floor renovation projects across Delhi NCR, Ghaziabad, and Northern India.

Applications

  • Vapour barrier primer on concrete before epoxy floor coating application
  • Moisture barrier for concrete floors before vinyl or rubber tile adhesive fixing
  • Substrate sealing before raised access floor systems on concrete
  • Penetrating sealer for porous concrete before epoxy self-levelling systems
  • Prevention of osmotic blistering under epoxy floor coatings on green slabs
  • Surface hardener and sealer for dusty or porous concrete substrates

Key Advantages

  • Very low viscosity — penetrates into the pore structure of concrete
  • Forms an effective moisture vapour barrier in the concrete surface zone
  • Solvent-free — safe for application in occupied or enclosed spaces
  • Can be applied to slightly damp (not wet) concrete substrates
  • Reduces the risk of coating failure from moisture-related osmotic blistering
  • Part of the Fosroc Nitocote chemical protective coating range

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if my concrete floor has a moisture problem before applying an epoxy coating?

The most reliable test is the ASTM F2170 in-situ relative humidity probe test or the calcium chloride dome test. A surface moisture reading above 75% RH (or above 25 lb/1000 sf/24 hr by calcium chloride) indicates moisture that could damage an epoxy coating. A simpler site check is to tape a square of polythene to the floor for 24 hours — if condensation forms on the underside, moisture is present. If significant moisture is confirmed, Nitocote VF vapour barrier should be used as the primer before the main epoxy floor system.

How wet can the concrete be when applying Nitocote VF?

Nitocote VF can be applied to concrete with surface moisture, but the surface must not have free standing water or be visibly wet. The optimal substrate is surface dry or very slightly damp. For concrete with higher residual moisture, a moisture-tolerant epoxy primer system should be selected and the application rate may need adjustment. Very wet or green concrete (less than 28 days old) may not respond well even to Nitocote VF — check relative humidity before application.

Does Nitocote VF eliminate the moisture vapour barrier completely?

Nitocote VF significantly reduces but does not completely eliminate moisture vapour transmission through the concrete slab. The system reduces vapour emission to a level compatible with most epoxy and PU floor coatings. For the highest specification vapour control requirements (for example, in pharmaceutical clean rooms or precision electronics manufacturing), a comprehensive vapour barrier assessment and multi-coat system may be required. Consult Space Arc Engineering for projects with critical vapour control specifications.
