D-Seal (Dhawan Associates) JointShield
Wall-to-wall seismic expansion joint cover with a factory-integrated water barrier, built for the large multi-directional movements that separate linked building blocks in Indian seismic zones.
What is it?
An engineered wall-to-wall seismic expansion joint cover system from D-Seal (Dhawan Associates, India), combining an aluminium 6063-T6 cover assembly with an integral water barrier. A vertical variant, JointShield-V, handles wall runs.
Where is it used?
Wide structural separation joints between adjoining building blocks: hospitals, airports and metro stations, high-rise towers and institutional campuses located in seismic zones.
Why use it?
Ordinary joint covers work loose or tear when a joint racks in three directions during a tremor. JointShield is designed for large multi-directional movement while its built-in barrier stops incidental water tracking through the gap.
How is it applied?
Fabricated to the measured joint gap, then mechanically fixed to prepared concrete or masonry edges by trained applicators, with the water barrier lapped continuously and terminated into the building drainage detail.
About D-Seal (Dhawan Associates) JointShield
Every large Indian building that is structurally split into blocks carries a hidden weak point: the seismic separation joint. These gaps are deliberately wide because adjacent blocks must sway independently during an earthquake, yet architects still need the wall line to read as one continuous surface, and facility teams need the gap to keep out water, dust and pests. D-Seal JointShield answers both demands. It is a wall-to-wall cover system engineered for large multi-directional movement, with a water barrier integrated into the assembly rather than added as a site afterthought.
The system is manufactured in India by Dhawan Associates under the D-Seal brand, in facilities certified to ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018, using extruded aluminium alloy 6063-T6 conforming to ASTM B221. That matters on Indian projects for two practical reasons: replacement sections and technical support are available domestically without import lead times, and each unit is fabricated against the actual joint gap surveyed on site. Space Arc Engineering supplies and installs JointShield across Delhi NCR and pan-India as an authorised D-Seal partner.
The technical insight
A seismic joint cover has a fundamentally different job from a thermal joint cover. Thermal joints breathe slowly in one axis; a seismic joint can close, open and shear laterally at the same instant, and the cover must survive that excursion and return to position without permanent distortion. Systems in the JointShield class achieve this by anchoring the assembly to one substrate while the cover element floats across the opposing face, so racking movement is absorbed as controlled sliding rather than as stress in the fixings. Beneath the metalwork, the integral flexible water barrier is installed with deliberate slack, forming a loop that flexes with the joint instead of tensioning against it. Any water that penetrates the cover line is intercepted by this secondary barrier and directed out, which is why continuity of the barrier at laps, corners and terminations decides real-world performance as much as the extrusion itself.
Where it is used
- Wall-to-wall seismic separation joints between structurally independent building blocks
- Hospitals and healthcare campuses where joint failure cannot interrupt sterile or critical areas
- Airport terminals, metro stations and transit hubs with long wall joint runs and heavy public exposure
- High-rise residential and commercial towers with podium-to-tower or wing-to-wing separations
- Institutional and university campuses built as linked seismic blocks
- Vertical wall joint runs, using the JointShield-V variant
- Joints where the wall line must stay weather-resistant as well as movement-capable
Key advantages
- Engineered for large multi-directional seismic movement, not just one-axis thermal cycling
- Integral water barrier is factory-fitted with the cover, removing the coordination gap between joint cover and waterproofing trades
- Extruded aluminium alloy 6063-T6 to ASTM B221 gives a corrosion-resistant, dimensionally stable assembly
- Dedicated vertical variant (JointShield-V) keeps detailing consistent up the full height of the wall
- Fabricated per project against the surveyed joint gap, so the cover fits the as-built structure rather than a nominal drawing dimension
- Made in India under ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and ISO 45001:2018 certified management systems, with domestic spares and support
- Supplied with installation by Space Arc Engineering, so a single party owns fit, barrier continuity and handover
Limitations & considerations
- Made-to-order fabrication means it is not an off-the-shelf item; allow for measurement, manufacture and delivery lead time in the construction programme
- The integral barrier manages incidental water crossing the joint line; joints exposed to ponding or pressure water still need a properly detailed primary waterproofing system around them
- It is a wall system and is not designed to carry foot or vehicular traffic; floor and parking joints need the ParkGuard or SeismoGuard family instead
- Movement capacity must be matched to the structural engineer’s calculated joint displacement; confirm the movement class and current technical data sheet with Space Arc at enquiry
- Fire-rated joint assemblies require a separately specified fire barrier insert, which is not implied by the standard cover
- Performance depends on sound, square concrete or masonry joint edges; spalled or out-of-tolerance edges must be repaired before installation
Selection & best practice
Start with a physical joint survey, not the structural drawings alone: record the actual gap width at multiple points, plus any step or misalignment between the two wall faces, because the unit is fabricated to these measurements. Repair spalled arrises and out-of-plumb edges with a suitable repair mortar before the system arrives. During installation, fix the assembly to one substrate as the anchored side and confirm the opposing side is free to slide; over-fixing both sides is the most common site error and defeats the seismic function. Install the water barrier with its designed slack loop intact, lap and seal every joint in the barrier, and carry it continuously through corners, direction changes and the transition to floor or roof joint systems so there is no dead-end where water can collect. On vertical runs, use JointShield-V and terminate the barrier into a drained detail at the base. Space Arc’s applicator teams handle the full sequence, and a joint-by-joint handover record is recommended for large campuses.

Industry use cases
Healthcare
Hospital blocks are commonly split into seismic units, and joints often pass beside wards and operating suites. JointShield keeps these separations sealed against water and dust while allowing the blocks to move independently.
Airports & Metro
Terminals and station boxes carry long, highly visible wall joints under constant public traffic. A flush engineered cover with a concealed barrier maintains both appearance and weather-tightness over wide gaps.
High-Rise Towers
Tower-to-podium and wing-to-wing separations in tall buildings see the largest racking movements in a tremor. The anchored-and-sliding cover arrangement absorbs these excursions without tearing out fixings.
Institutional Campuses
Universities and government complexes built as linked seismic blocks accumulate hundreds of metres of wall joints. Project-fabricated units keep detailing uniform across phases and buildings.
Critical Facilities
Facilities that must remain operational after a seismic event benefit from joint covers designed to move and return to position, rather than rigid trims that fail on first displacement.

How we position D-Seal (Dhawan Associates) JointShield
JointShield covers the wall joint, but a seismic separation rarely stops at the wall. Within the same D-Seal family, SkyBridge handles the roof continuation of the joint, SeismoMax addresses larger seismic cover requirements, and ParkGuard and SeismoGuard 100 take the joint across trafficked floors and parking decks, so one manufacturer’s detailing runs through the whole building envelope. Where the design calls for a compression seal rather than a cover, D-Seal GatewaySeal EPDM profiles are the natural pairing, and the D-Seal Water Barrier with Outlet extends drainage continuity below grade. For the static construction joints and perimeter sealant work around the system, we typically specify Fosroc Nitoseal MS600 or Sika polyurethane sealants from our distribution range, and Dr. Fixit or Fosroc membranes where the adjoining terrace needs primary waterproofing. Space Arc can package the full joint schedule, supply and installation as one scope.
