Fosroc Conplast X421

Chloride-free integral waterproofing admixture that reduces concrete permeability from the inside out by cutting the water-cement ratio.

BrandFosrocCategoryWaterproofingFormA chloride-free, water-reducing integral waterproofing admixture based on a formulated blend of plasticisers…

What is it?

A chloride-free, water-reducing integral waterproofing admixture based on a formulated blend of plasticisers, supplied as a pink liquid that instantly disperses in mixing water.

Where is it used?

Cast-in-situ and precast structural concrete where reduced permeability is needed: basement rafts and retaining walls, water tanks, roof slabs, sumps, lift pits and below-ground RCC.

Why use it?

It lowers the water-cement ratio without sacrificing workability, so the hardened concrete is denser and less permeable throughout the section rather than relying on a surface film that fails if damaged.

How is it applied?

Dispensed by an accurate dispenser and added to the concrete along with the mixing water at the batching stage; never painted or coated on. Normal recommended dosage is 6 litres per m3 of concrete, optimised by trial mix.

About Fosroc Conplast X421

Fosroc Conplast X421 is a liquid integral waterproofing admixture that works on a simple but durable principle: the cheapest, most reliable way to make concrete watertight is to make the concrete itself denser, not to wrap it in a coating. It is a chloride-free blend of plasticisers supplied as a pink liquid that instantly disperses in the mixing water. Because the plasticisers improve the efficiency of the mix water, the same workability can be achieved at a lower water content. That reduction in the water-cement (w/c) ratio is the entire mechanism: less free water means fewer and finer capillary pores once the concrete cures, and a lower-porosity matrix resists the passage of water under pressure. Crucially, this protection is built into the full thickness of the pour, so it survives surface abrasion, minor cracking from shrinkage and the inevitable wear that destroys applied membranes and coatings over time. The product was previously marketed as Conplast Prolapin 421 and sits within Fosroc’s well-established Conplast admixture family. In Indian projects it is specified wherever RCC must hold back water or stay dry for the design life of the structure, and Space Arc Engineering supplies it as an authorised Fosroc distributor across Delhi NCR and on a Pan-India basis. It is important to set expectations honestly: an integral admixture is not a magic liquid. Fosroc is explicit that Conplast X421 will not make poor-quality concrete waterproof. It is one part of a watertight-concrete system that also demands well-graded aggregate, a minimum cement content of 300 kg/m3, properly placed waterstops between lifts and bays, adequate cover and disciplined curing. Used inside that system, it gives engineers a low-permeability concrete without adding a separate trade or a coating that has to be maintained.

The technical insight

The headline number on the official datasheet is the most useful way to understand what Conplast X421 actually delivers. In Fosroc’s own evaluation, an Initial Surface Absorption Test (ISAT to BS 1881 Part 5) on a 5:1 sand:cement mortar after 28 days gave a control reading of 0.48 ml/m2/s against 0.13 ml/m2/s for the same mortar dosed with Conplast X421 at 2.0%, with the w/c ratio dropping from 0.60 to 0.56. That is roughly a four-fold reduction in surface water absorption from a modest 0.04 reduction in w/c ratio, which illustrates how steeply concrete permeability responds to even small cuts in free water. The admixture is also a water reducer, so the same dosage that tightens the pore structure simultaneously raises compressive strength at constant workability, or buys back workability at constant strength. Two practical cautions sit in the fine print. First, like most water-reducing admixtures it can retard set, and Fosroc flags that dosages at or above 0.31 litres per 100 kg of cement are likely to fall in the retarding category; retardation increases at low temperatures and when cement-replacement materials such as PFA, GGBFS or micro-silica are used. Second, an overdose of roughly double the intended quantity will increase both retardation and workability, after which good curing (water spray, wet hessian or a Concure curing membrane) becomes essential. Because results vary with local cement chemistry (tri-calcium aluminate content is a known variable) and aggregate, the dosage should always be confirmed by a site trial mix rather than copied from a generic spec.

Where it is used

  • Basement rafts, retaining walls and below-ground RCC requiring low-permeability concrete
  • Underground and overhead water tanks, sumps and reservoirs
  • Roof slabs and terraces where dense, less-permeable concrete is specified
  • Lift pits, sewage and effluent tanks and other water-retaining structures
  • Precast concrete elements needing integral waterproofing
  • Foundations and footings in high water-table or coastal soils across India

Key advantages

  • Reduces mix water without affecting workability, lowering w/c ratio and permeability
  • Integral protection acts through the full concrete section, not just the surface
  • Protection is retained even if the surface is later damaged or abraded
  • Chloride-free (Nil to BS 5075), so safe for reinforced and prestressed concrete
  • Lower w/c ratio improves compressive strength at the same workability
  • Compatible with OPC and cement-replacement materials such as PFA, GGBFS and micro-silica
  • Added at the batching plant with the mixing water, needing no extra site trade or surface coat

Limitations & considerations

  • Will not make poor-quality or badly compacted concrete waterproof; good concrete practice is mandatory
  • Requires a minimum cement content of 300 kg/m3 and well-graded aggregates
  • Not a substitute for waterstops, adequate cover or proper construction joint detailing
  • Can retard set, especially at low temperatures or with cement-replacement materials; dosages at/above 0.31 L per 100 kg cement tend to retard
  • Overdosing (about double) increases retardation and workability and demands careful curing
  • For waterproofing cement:sand mortars, renders or screeds, Fosroc recommends Cebex 031 instead
  • Optimum dosage must be set by trial mix; published figures are typical, not guaranteed

Selection & best practice

Treat Conplast X421 as one component of a watertight-concrete system, not a standalone cure. Fix the basics first: a designed mix with at least 300 kg/m3 cement, well-graded aggregate, low w/c ratio and full compaction. Establish dosage by a site trial mix using the actual project cement and aggregate before adopting the normal recommended 6 litres/m3, and stay alert to set retardation if you are using PFA, GGBFS or micro-silica or pouring in cool weather. Dispense the admixture accurately with a recommended dispenser and add it to the concrete with the mixing water, never directly to dry cement or as a separate slug. Keep different Fosroc admixtures separate until they meet in the mixer. Provide and correctly place waterstops between every lift and floor bay, maintain adequate cover to reinforcement, and protect the pour with disciplined curing (water spray, wet hessian or a Concure spray membrane), which matters most if an overdose has occurred. Verify the supplied product is within its 12-month shelf life and has been stored between 2 C and 50 C.

Frequently asked questions

Is Fosroc Conplast X421 a coating or an admixture?
It is an admixture, not a coating. It is a pink liquid added to the concrete with the mixing water at the batching stage, so the waterproofing action is built into the full thickness of the concrete rather than applied to its surface.
What is the recommended dosage of Conplast X421?
Fosroc gives a normal recommended dosage of 6 litres per m3 of concrete, but the optimum should always be confirmed by a trial mix with your actual cement and aggregate. Note that dosages at or above 0.31 litres per 100 kg of cement tend to fall in the retarding category.
Does Conplast X421 contain chloride?
No. It is chloride-free, tested Nil to BS 5075, which makes it suitable for reinforced and prestressed concrete where chlorides would risk corroding the steel.
Will Conplast X421 stop leakage in poor concrete?
No. Fosroc states clearly that it will not make poor-quality concrete waterproof. It needs well-graded aggregate, a minimum cement content of 300 kg/m3, proper waterstops, adequate cover and good curing to perform; it is one part of a watertight-concrete system.
Can it be used with fly ash (PFA), GGBS or micro-silica?
Yes, it is compatible with all Portland cements and with cement-replacement materials such as PFA, GGBFS and micro-silica. Be aware these materials, and low temperatures, can increase set retardation, so a trial mix is advisable.
What packaging and shelf life does Conplast X421 have?
It is supplied in 25 litre and 210 litre drums or in bulk, with a 12-month shelf life when stored between 2 C and 50 C. Space Arc Engineering supplies it as an authorised Fosroc distributor across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.

How we position Fosroc Conplast X421

Conplast X421 is Fosroc’s classic plasticiser-type integral waterproofer, best understood as a permeability-reducing water reducer rather than a high-tech crystalline or hydrophobic system. Within the Fosroc range, it sits close to Conplast WL (the rebranded Conplast X421IC, a lignosulphonate-based integral liquid) and Conplast WP421; for waterproofing cement:sand mortars, renders or screeds Fosroc itself points buyers to Cebex 031 instead, and surface or joint sealing is handled by Fosroc’s Nitoproof, Brushbond and Proofex lines. Against competitors, the nearest equivalents are Dr. Fixit Pidiproof LW+ (a popular India-market integral liquid waterproofing compound), Sika WT-200 P / Sika-1 and the crystalline Sika WT-100 / Penetron-type products, MYK Arment (MBS) Inproof LW, and STP’s integral admixtures. Honest framing: simple plasticiser-based integral admixtures like X421 and Dr. Fixit LW+ are economical and improve density across the whole section, but they cannot self-heal cracks; where active crack-bridging or self-sealing is required, a crystalline admixture (Sika WT-100, Penetron, Kryton) or a sheet/liquid membrane is the stronger choice. Space Arc Engineering can advise on selecting between Conplast X421 and these alternatives for a given basement, tank or roof application across Delhi NCR and Pan-India.
