What is it?

A portland cement-based crystalline capillary waterproofing admixture batched directly into ready-mix or precast concrete — not a coating applied after the pour.

Where is it used?

Basements, raft foundations, water-retaining structures, tunnels, and below-grade parking, wherever the concrete itself — not a surface membrane — needs to stay watertight.

Why use it?

It reacts with moisture and calcium hydroxide inside the curing concrete to grow insoluble crystals through the capillary pore network, cutting water absorption and letting hairline cracks self-seal over time.

How is it applied?

Dosed at 2% by mass of cement (2–2.5% range) at the RMC or precast batching plant, then mixed for a minimum of five minutes for uniform dispersion — there’s no separate site-applied step.

About Master Builders Solutions MasterLife WP 300D

MasterLife WP 300D — marketed globally by Master Builders Solutions as the MasterLife 300D crystalline capillary waterproofing admixture — is a portland cement-based powder batched directly into the concrete mix rather than applied to its surface after casting. Once in contact with moisture and the calcium hydroxide released during cement hydration, its active chemistry grows non-soluble crystals through the capillary pore structure of the hardened concrete. Those crystals choke off the pathways water would otherwise travel through, and because the reaction stays dormant until moisture reaches it, hairline cracks that open later can trigger fresh crystal growth and partially reseal themselves. It’s one system, poured once, rather than a slab plus a separate waterproofing layer that has to survive its own installation, backfilling, and years of ground movement.

For Delhi NCR and much of Pan-India construction, the appeal is practical: raft foundations, basements, and underground water tanks sit below a water table that swings with the monsoon, and retrofitting a failed external membrane under a completed building is expensive and disruptive. Dosing the waterproofing into the concrete itself removes that failure point, provided the batching plant follows the mix-design and mixing-time discipline the system needs. Space Arc Engineering supplies MasterLife WP 300D to ready-mix producers and precast units as part of its Master Builders Solutions portfolio; because the product’s published technical literature is currently oriented to North American and European plants, we recommend confirming current lot availability, packaging, and lead time for your project before locking a mix design around it.

The technical insight

MasterLife 300D belongs to the class ACI 212.3R-16 calls Permeability-Reducing Admixtures (PRA) — chemistry meant to complement a well-proportioned mix, not rescue a poor one. Independent lab data at the standard 2% dosage shows a 43% reduction in capillary absorption (ASTM C1585) and a 40% reduction in water penetration under pressure (Modified DIN 1048), alongside a measured 7% gain in compressive strength (ASTM C39/C39M) and no change to moisture vapour transmission rate or electrical conductance versus untreated concrete. It’s certified to ASTM C494/C494M as a Type S specific-performance admixture, is chloride-free, and is compatible with PCE superplasticisers such as the MasterGlenium range. The manufacturer ties all of this to a maximum 0.45 water-cementitious ratio and a minimum 28 MPa design strength — below that threshold, the crystalline mechanism has less capillary structure to work through and the reported gains taper off.

Where it is used

  • Raft and pile-cap foundations in high water-table sites across Delhi NCR and the Gangetic plain
  • Basement and podium slabs and retaining walls in multi-level below-grade parking
  • Water and sewage treatment tanks, UGTs and OHTs where chloride-free, water-contact-safe waterproofing matters
  • Metro, tunnel and subway lining segments and secondary containment structures
  • Swimming pools and other water-retaining precast elements
  • Retaining and diaphragm walls exposed to positive or negative hydrostatic pressure
  • Precast concrete components produced under controlled batching conditions
  • Below-grade vaults and structures where a surface membrane would be impossible to inspect or repair later

Key advantages

  • Waterproofs the concrete matrix itself, so there’s no membrane to puncture, blister, or delaminate later
  • Self-seals hairline cracks that open after the pour, as long as moisture reaches the crystalline sites
  • Adds roughly 7% compressive strength rather than costing any, per ASTM C39/C39M test data
  • Chloride-free — won’t initiate or accelerate corrosion of embedded reinforcement
  • Resists water pressure from both the positive (external) and negative (internal) face
  • Little to no effect on setting time or workability within the dosed range, and compatible with PCE superplasticisers
  • Keeps concrete vapour-permeable, avoiding the trapped-moisture issues some surface membrane systems create
  • Chloride-free formulation is also suited to potable-water and water-retaining structures

Limitations & considerations

  • Only as good as the concrete it’s dosed into — poor mix design, a high water-cement ratio, or under-mixing will undercut the crystalline reaction regardless of dosage
  • It’s a batching-plant product, not a site-applied fix — it can’t be added after the pour or used to patch an already-leaking structure
  • Construction joints, cold joints, and pipe penetrations still need dedicated waterstops or injection hoses; the admixture protects the concrete mass, not joint interfaces
  • Crack-sealing is a slow, moisture-triggered process rather than an instant fix — active running leaks need conventional injection grouting first
  • Published technical data and India-specific stock positions aren’t consistently listed on the manufacturer’s regional site — confirm current availability and packaging through Space Arc before finalising a mix design
  • The red-pigmented version carries a different dosage rate (2.5% vs 2%), so specifications must state which variant is intended

Selection & best practice

Design the concrete to a maximum 0.45 water-cementitious ratio and at least 28 MPa (4,000 psi) strength, and dose MasterLife WP 300D at 2% by mass of cement for the standard grey mix (2.5% for the red-pigmented variant). Batch it like any other cementitious material at the plant and mix for a minimum of five minutes after addition to ensure even dispersion — under-mixed batches show patchy performance. Pair it with waterstops or injection hoses at every construction and expansion joint, since the admixture protects the concrete mass, not the interfaces between pours, and keep curing disciplined: crystalline growth needs sustained moisture through the first weeks to develop fully.

Industry use cases

Residential & Commercial Basements

Integral waterproofing for raft foundations and basement retaining walls on NCR sites with seasonal high water tables, reducing reliance on external membrane waterproofing that’s hard to inspect once backfilled.

Water & Wastewater Infrastructure

UGTs, OHTs and STP tanks where a chloride-free, water-contact-safe waterproofing system is preferred.

Metro & Tunnelling

Precast tunnel-lining segments and cut-and-cover structures needing consistent, factory-controlled waterproofing rather than field-applied coatings.

Below-Grade Parking & Podiums

Multi-level basement parking decks where hydrostatic pressure and long-term crack control both matter.

Precast & Swimming Pools

Precast water-retaining elements and cast-in-situ pools produced under batching-plant quality control.

Frequently asked questions

Does MasterLife WP 300D replace the need for an external waterproofing membrane?
On many below-grade elements it can, since it waterproofs the concrete mass itself rather than relying on a surface layer — but joints, penetrations, and other high-risk interfaces are still normally detailed with waterstops or injection hoses as backup, and specifiers in aggressive exposure conditions often combine both systems anyway.
Can our RMC plant add it to a truck on-site, or only at the batching plant?
It’s designed to be batched like cement — added at the plant with at least five minutes of mixing afterward — not dosed into a truck that has already left the plant, since uniform dispersion through the mix is critical to how it performs.
Will it slow down our pour or change workability?
The manufacturer’s data shows little to no effect on setting time within the recommended dosage range, and it’s compatible with PCE-based superplasticisers, so workability can be managed the same way you’d manage any structural mix.
Is it safe for potable water tanks?
It’s chloride-free and non-toxic in the cured state, which is why it’s commonly specified for water and sewage-treatment structures — but always confirm it against the specific potable-water certification your project authority requires, since that isn’t spelled out on the general technical data sheet we reviewed.
What happens if our concrete is already low quality or has a high water-cement ratio?
The crystalline reaction needs a reasonably dense capillary structure to work through — the manufacturer recommends a maximum 0.45 w/cm ratio and roughly 28 MPa strength. Below that, expect diminished results; this product complements good concrete practice, it doesn’t rescue a poor mix design.
How is 300D different from the 300C or 300L versions in the same family?
Same crystalline chemistry — 300D comes in shreddable bags for direct batch-plant addition, 300C is packaged in water-soluble bags for cleaner dosing, and 300L is a ready-to-pump liquid version. The choice usually comes down to your plant’s dosing equipment rather than the concrete performance you need.

How we position Master Builders Solutions MasterLife WP 300D

Within the Master Builders Solutions range, MasterLife WP 300D sits alongside the 300C (water-soluble-bag) and 300L (liquid) formats of the same crystalline chemistry — the choice between them usually comes down to a plant’s dosing equipment rather than concrete performance — and it complements Space Arc’s MasterSeal surface-applied membranes and MasterFlow grouts for projects that need both an integral and a surface-level waterproofing strategy. Where a project calls for a genuine crystalline alternative, Fosroc’s Conplast Crystalline is the closest like-for-like comparison: a powder-form, integral crystalline admixture built on the same self-sealing principle. The two are chemically close enough that the decision often comes down to which brand’s documentation the structural consultant already references and current plant stock, rather than a meaningful performance gap.
