What is it?

A two-part, water-based, solvent-free protective epoxy coating from Sika, supplied as a coloured resin (Part A) and an off-white hardener (Part B) mixed 1:1 by weight.

Where is it used?

Exposed cementitious structures such as cantilevers, galleries, retaining walls, basements, parapets, balconies, workshop and plant-room walls, and potable-water reservoirs.

Why use it?

It seals the concrete surface against rain, dew and mild chemical exposure while remaining odourless, food-grade certified (USFDA 175.300 via CFTRI) and safe for drinking-water tanks.

How is it applied?

Roller-apply a diluted primer coat (Sikagard-67 plus 20% water), then 2-3 seal coats by roller onto a clean, sound substrate with under 6% moisture at +8 to +35 degrees C.

About Sika Sikagard-67

Sikagard-67 is Sika’s water-based protective epoxy coating, built for situations where a concrete surface needs a durable, breathable film but the job cannot tolerate solvent fumes or strong odours. Because it is water-thinned and solvent-free, it can be brushed or rolled in enclosed spaces like basements, plant rooms and reservoir interiors without the ventilation headaches that come with conventional solvent-borne epoxies. It arrives as a coloured resin paste and an off-white liquid hardener that are combined 1:1 by weight, and it is offered in a dozen RAL shades so specifiers can match colour-coding or plant standards on site.

What sets this coating apart in the Space Arc range is its potable-water credential. It carries food-grade approval under USFDA 175.300 (certified through CFTRI, Mysore), which is why engineers reach for it to line drinking-water reservoirs and overhead tanks where taste, odour and toxicity are non-negotiable. Beyond water retention, it is a practical weather shield for exposed vertical concrete: cantilevers, galleries, retaining walls, parapets and balcony faces that take the brunt of rain, dew and airborne pollutants. It also resists oil and grease, making it a sensible wall lining for workshops and service bays.

The technical insight

The performance comes from a cross-linked epoxy film that cures on the concrete surface rather than soaking deep into it. Once Part A and Part B react, the resin and hardener knit into a continuous, pore-free membrane that physically blocks the two things that degrade exposed concrete: liquid water driving in from rain and dew, and mild aggressive agents in the atmosphere. Being water-based, the product wets damp substrates far better than solvent systems and even adheres to surfaces that are still slightly moist, which is a genuine advantage in Indian monsoon and reservoir conditions where a bone-dry substrate is rarely achievable. The epoxy backbone is what delivers the oil, grease and chemical resistance, while the low odour and absence of solvent make it viable for confined, occupied or food-contact environments. The catch is that this is a surface-protective film, not a structural or high-build lining, so its job is to keep water and contaminants out of otherwise sound concrete, not to rebuild or bridge cracks in it.

Where it is used

  • Protective coating on exposed vertical concrete such as cantilevers, galleries and retaining walls
  • Internal lining of potable-water reservoirs and overhead drinking-water tanks
  • Weather protection for parapets, balcony faces and building fascias
  • Wall coating in basements where solvent fumes must be avoided
  • Oil- and grease-resistant wall finish for workshops and service bays
  • Protective coating for plant-room and machinery-hall walls
  • Surface protection on rendered, stone, cement and asbestos-cement substrates
  • Colour-coded wall coatings in industrial areas using its RAL shade range

Key advantages

  • Water-based, solvent-free and odourless, so it can be used in enclosed and occupied spaces
  • Food-grade certified (USFDA 175.300 via CFTRI) and safe for potable-water reservoirs
  • Adheres to damp surfaces, easing application in humid and monsoon conditions
  • Resistant to oil and grease, suiting workshop and industrial walls
  • Simple 1:1 mixing by weight with roller application keeps site work straightforward
  • Available in twelve RAL shades for colour matching and coding
  • Tools clean up with plain water while the coating is still fresh
  • Weather-proof and mildly dew-resistant film that protects cementitious structures

Limitations & considerations

  • A surface-protective film only, not a crack-bridging membrane or a structural repair material
  • Designed for mild chemical attack, not for aggressive acid, alkali or effluent exposure
  • Substrate moisture must be below 6% and 3 degrees C above dew point to avoid blushing and adhesion failure
  • Short working window – pot life is only about 60 minutes at 20 degrees C and shorter in Indian summer heat
  • Full cure takes about 7 days, so tanks and surfaces cannot be put into service immediately
  • Some surface discolouration can occur under direct sunlight, though it does not affect performance

Selection & best practice

Prepare the concrete mechanically by grinding or abrasive blasting to remove laitance and open the surface texture, then repair any blowholes or voids with suitable Sika products before coating. Confirm the substrate is sound (minimum 20 N/mm2 compressive, 1.5 N/mm2 pull-off strength), clean, and below 6% moisture; if moisture is higher, apply Sikagard-720 EpoCem as a temporary moisture barrier first. Stir Part A, add all of Part B, and mix for two minutes to a uniform colour, then decant and remix to avoid unmixed material – but do not over-mix, which entrains air. Roll on the primer coat (Sikagard-67 plus 20% water by weight) as a continuous, pore-free film, then follow with 2-3 seal coats. Keep air and substrate between +8 and +35 degrees C, humidity at or below 75%, and respect the 3-hour minimum recoat interval. Clean tools with water immediately, since cured material can only be removed mechanically.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sikagard-67 safe for drinking-water tanks?
Yes. It carries food-grade approval under USFDA 175.300 (certified through CFTRI, Mysore) and is specifically suitable for potable-water reservoirs, being odourless and non-toxic once cured.
How much Sikagard-67 do I need per square metre?
Budget roughly 0.1-0.2 kg/m2 for the diluted primer coat, plus about 0.15-0.25 kg/m2 for each of 2-3 seal coats. These are theoretical figures and do not account for surface porosity, profile or wastage.
Can it be applied on a damp surface?
It adheres to damp surfaces, which helps in humid conditions, but the substrate moisture content must still be below 6%. If it is higher, apply Sikagard-720 EpoCem as a temporary moisture barrier first.
How is it different from a solvent-based epoxy coating?
Sikagard-67 is water-thinned, solvent-free and odourless, so it can be used in basements, reservoirs and occupied spaces without the fumes and ventilation demands of solvent systems, and tools clean up with plain water.
How long is the pot life and cure time?
Pot life is about 60 minutes at 20 degrees C (shorter in hotter weather, around 40 minutes at 30 degrees C). Full cure is around 7 days at 30 degrees C, so plan service dates accordingly.
What colours does it come in?
Twelve RAL shades including sand yellow, oyster white, ivory, traffic orange, pastel turquoise, several greys, ochre brown, cream and signal white. Slight discolouration can occur under direct sunlight without affecting performance.

How we position Sika Sikagard-67

Within the Sika family, pair Sikagard-67 with Sikagard-720 EpoCem where substrate moisture exceeds 6% and a temporary moisture barrier is needed before coating, and reach for the Sikafloor, Sikadur and Sikagard repair range to fill blowholes and level defects during surface preparation. When the exposure moves beyond mild weathering into carbonation and chloride protection of reinforced concrete, an anti-carbonation coating is the better specification. For a heavier-duty, high-build potable-water tank lining, Fosroc Nitocote EP405 from our range is the genuine step-up, and for silane-siloxane hydrophobic protection against carbonation, Fosroc Dekguard S is the complementary choice. Space Arc supplies all of these lines Pan-India from Delhi NCR, so the coating can be matched precisely to the substrate, exposure and certification the project actually demands.
