What is it?

A ready-to-use, aluminised, hydrocarbon-resin, solvent-based liquid curing compound from STP that dries to a reflective silver film on fresh concrete.

Where is it used?

Slabs, pavements, roads, bridge decks and large exposed pours cast in hot, sunny or drying-wind conditions across India.

Why use it?

It forms a moisture-retaining membrane so cement hydrates fully, cutting plastic shrinkage cracking, surface dusting and strength loss.

How is it applied?

Spray-applied in a single even coat over the freshly finished surface as soon as bleed water disappears; the silver film shows exactly what has been covered.

About STP ShaliCure AL SB 10

STP ShaliCure AL SB 10 is a spray-applied curing compound built for the reality of Indian site conditions, where concrete is often placed under direct sun, high ambient temperatures and drying winds. It is a ready-to-use liquid based on a hydrocarbon resin carried in solvent, loaded with fine aluminium pigment. The moment it is sprayed onto a freshly finished slab and the solvent flashes off, it leaves behind a continuous, non-penetrating film that seals the surface. That film does two jobs at once: it locks in the mix water the concrete needs to keep hydrating, and its metallic aluminium coating throws back a large share of the solar radiation that would otherwise cook the top layer.

For a site engineer, the practical value is control and verification. Traditional wet curing with ponding or hessian is labour-heavy, water-hungry and easy to skip on a busy pour, and clear curing compounds give no visual feedback on whether the whole deck was actually treated. ShaliCure AL SB 10 dries to an obvious silver sheen, so the supervisor can walk the slab and instantly see any missed strip or thin patch. It suits fast-track construction, remote sites where curing water is scarce, and any pour where the first 24 to 72 hours of hydration decide the durability of the finished structure.

The technical insight

Concrete gains its strength and impermeability from cement hydration, a reaction that needs the mix water to stay in the matrix long enough to react. In hot, exposed conditions, surface water evaporates faster than bleed water can rise, the top layer dries out prematurely, and you get plastic shrinkage cracks, a weak dusty skin and lower durability exactly where the concrete is most exposed. A membrane-forming curing compound tackles this by physically capping evaporation. ShaliCure AL SB 10’s hydrocarbon resin dries into a thin continuous film that acts as a vapour barrier, holding water in the surface zone so hydration continues undisturbed. The aluminium pigment adds a second mechanism unique to aluminised grades: its reflective flakes bounce back incident solar radiation, lowering the peak surface temperature the concrete reaches. That matters because a cooler surface both evaporates less and develops a gentler thermal gradient between top and core, reducing the risk of thermal and shrinkage cracking. The silver film is also a built-in quality tool, converting an invisible, easily-skipped operation into one you can inspect at a glance.

Where it is used

  • Curing of road and highway pavement concrete placed in open, sun-exposed conditions
  • Large floor slabs, raft foundations and podium decks where wet curing is impractical
  • Bridge decks, flyover and elevated corridor pours exposed to wind and sun
  • Precast yards needing rapid, verifiable curing turnaround on repeated elements
  • Canal linings, reservoirs and water-retaining structures cast in hot weather
  • Airport aprons, industrial hardstandings and other high-abrasion exposed slabs
  • Remote or water-scarce sites where ponding and wet-hessian curing are not viable
  • Fast-track construction where the deck must be trafficked or reworked quickly

Key advantages

  • Ready to use straight from the container with no dilution or mixing on site
  • Silver film gives an unmistakable visual check that the whole surface is coated
  • Aluminium pigment reflects solar radiation and lowers peak surface temperature
  • Seals in mix water for fuller hydration, reducing shrinkage cracks and dusting
  • Spray application covers large areas fast with far less labour than wet curing
  • Saves scarce curing water, valuable on remote and water-stressed projects
  • Consistent membrane thickness across the pour, unlike patchy manual methods
  • Suits hot-weather concreting, a common failure point on Indian sites

Limitations & considerations

  • Solvent-based and flammable, so it needs ventilation and strict no-naked-flame handling
  • The cured film can act as a bond-breaker; it must be removed or abraded before applying toppings, screeds, tiles, membranes or coatings
  • Best applied in one continuous operation right after finishing; late or uneven spraying reduces effectiveness
  • Not a substitute for good mix design, placing and finishing, only a curing aid
  • The silver film is a visible finish, so it is unsuitable where a clear or self-fading cure is required on architectural surfaces

Selection & best practice

Apply as soon as the surface sheen of bleed water has just disappeared but the concrete is still green; spraying too early disturbs the finish and too late lets premature drying begin. Stir the container to redistribute the aluminium pigment before use, then spray in a single even pass using a low-pressure sprayer, holding a steady distance for uniform film thickness. Use the silver sheen as your coverage map, going back over any dull or missed strips. Keep the material and application away from open flames and sparks, and work in ventilated conditions. Crucially, tell the finishing trades that the film is present: wherever a bonded topping, screed, tile bed, waterproofing membrane or coating will follow, the cured compound must be mechanically removed or thoroughly abraded first so the next layer can bond. Confirm the exact coverage rate, drying time and pack size against the current STP technical data sheet for your batch and site conditions.

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is ShaliCure AL SB 10?
It is STP’s ready-to-use, aluminised, solvent-based curing compound. Sprayed onto fresh concrete, it dries to a silver film that seals in moisture for proper hydration while reflecting the sun to keep the surface cooler.
Why choose an aluminised compound over a clear or wax-based one?
The aluminium pigment reflects solar radiation and lowers peak surface temperature, which matters in Indian hot-weather concreting. The visible silver film also lets you confirm complete coverage, something clear compounds cannot offer.
Do I still need to wet-cure after using it?
No. The film is the curing mechanism, forming a barrier that holds mix water in the surface zone. That is its advantage on sites where curing water or labour for ponding and hessian is limited.
Will it interfere with tiles, screeds or waterproofing applied later?
Yes, it can act as a bond-breaker. Anywhere a bonded topping, screed, tile bed, membrane or coating will follow, the cured film must be mechanically removed or abraded first so the next layer bonds properly.
How is it applied and when?
Spray it in a single even coat as soon as the surface bleed-water sheen disappears. Stir first to disperse the pigment, then use the silver film as a live coverage check, re-spraying any missed or thin areas.
Is it safe to handle on site?
It is solvent-based and flammable, so keep it away from naked flames and sparks and use it with adequate ventilation. Follow the current STP technical data sheet and safety data sheet for full handling guidance.

How we position STP ShaliCure AL SB 10

ShaliCure AL SB 10 is the aluminised, sun-reflecting member of STP’s ShaliCure curing range. Where a silver film is not wanted, ShaliCure AL SB offers the solvent-based aluminised route in a synthetic-resin base, while ShaliCure AL WB gives a water-based aluminised option with lower solvent odour for enclosed or sensitive sites. For projects that must avoid solvents entirely, STP’s water-based acrylic ShaliCure Acrylate grades are the natural alternative. Across our other brands, Space Arc also supplies equivalent membrane-forming curing compounds from Fosroc and Dr. Fixit; we help specifiers match the right chemistry to the exposure, follow-on finishes and site logistics rather than defaulting to one product.
