High-Performance Polymer-Modified Tile Adhesive for Ceramic, Vitrified, and Stone Tile Installation

Authorized Project Distributor — Sika India | Space Arc Engineering, Ghaziabad

Product Overview

SikaCeram StarFix is a high-performance, polymer-modified cementitious tile adhesive from the Sika SikaCeram tiling systems range, engineered for the professional installation of ceramic, porcelain (vitrified), granite, marble, and other natural and engineered stone tiles on concrete, masonry, and screed substrates in Indian building construction. The polymer modification of SikaCeram StarFix significantly enhances its performance compared to ordinary cement and sand mortar (OPC-sand bedding) tile adhesive — the key improvements are: higher initial grab and open time for correct positioning of tiles; substantially higher bond strength (shear adhesion strength of 1.0 to 2.0 MPa compared to 0.3 to 0.5 MPa for standard OPC-sand mortar); compatibility with large-format tiles (600×600 mm, 800×800 mm, and larger vitrified porcelain tiles increasingly popular in Indian residential and commercial projects); and resistance to water and moisture in wet area applications including bathrooms, wet rooms, swimming pools, and exterior facades. SikaCeram StarFix is a one-component powder mixed with clean water on site — no separate liquid polymer component to measure and add, which simplifies site mixing and reduces the risk of incorrect polymer dosing. It provides a generous open time (the period during which laid tiles can still be adjusted and correctly positioned) of typically 20 to 30 minutes at 25 degrees C, significantly longer than OPC-sand mortar which stiffens in 5 to 10 minutes in hot Delhi NCR conditions and prevents tile adjustment once placed. Space Arc Engineering supplies SikaCeram StarFix for residential and commercial tiling projects, hotel finishes, swimming pool construction, and facade tiling throughout Delhi NCR, Ghaziabad, and Uttar Pradesh.

Applications

  • Large-format vitrified porcelain tile installation on concrete and screed floors — 600×600 mm and above
  • Wall tile installation in bathrooms, wet rooms, and kitchen splash-backs
  • Swimming pool wall and floor ceramic and porcelain tile installation
  • Exterior facade tile installation — weather-resistant polymer bond for outdoor exposure
  • Natural stone (marble, granite, limestone) tile installation on floors and walls
  • Balcony and terrace tile installation — exterior exposure, freeze-thaw and UV resistance

Key Advantages

  • High bond strength 1.0 to 2.0 MPa — suitable for large-format vitrified tiles, heavy stone tiles
  • Generous open time 20 to 30 minutes — correct positioning of tiles before adhesive skins
  • Water-resistant bond — suitable for wet rooms, swimming pools, and exterior applications
  • One-component powder — add water only, no liquid polymer component to measure
  • Non-slip formula — tiles do not slide on vertical wall applications during installation
  • Suitable for under-tile heating systems — polymer-modified bond accommodates thermal cycling

Frequently Asked Questions

What notched trowel size should be used for SikaCeram StarFix with different tile sizes and why does trowel size matter for tile bonding?

Notched trowel size directly controls the thickness of the SikaCeram StarFix adhesive bed and therefore the contact area and bond strength between the tile and the substrate. Indian tiling practice sometimes uses inadequate trowel sizes that result in adhesive beds with less than 50 percent contact area — this is a major cause of tile debonding, hollow-sounding tiles, and tile cracking when the substrate flexes slightly. The recommended notched trowel sizes for SikaCeram StarFix are: For small tiles up to 150×150 mm (ceramic wall tiles): V3 or U3 notch trowel (3 mm notch depth) providing 2 to 3 mm adhesive bed thickness. For medium tiles 200×200 mm to 400×400 mm (standard ceramic and vitrified floor tiles): V6 or U6 notch trowel (6 mm notch depth) providing 4 to 5 mm compressed bed. For large format tiles 600×600 mm and above (large vitrified porcelain tiles): V10 or U10 notch trowel (10 mm notch depth) providing 6 to 8 mm compressed bed — and for tiles this size, the back-buttering technique should also be used (apply SikaCeram StarFix to the back of the tile as well as to the substrate with a flat margin trowel) to maximise contact area and ensure full coverage. Back-buttering is mandatory for natural stone tiles (marble, granite) as these have an irregular back surface with voids that will not be filled by substrate-only application. The key performance target is minimum 80 percent adhesive contact area visible on the back of the tile when it is lifted immediately after bedding — check periodically during tile laying to confirm adequate coverage.
