What is it?

A powdered densified silica fume (microsilica) with over 90% amorphous SiO2, added to concrete as a pozzolanic, pore-refining supplementary cementitious material.

Where is it used?

High-strength and high-durability concrete: bridge decks, marine and coastal structures, high-rise raft foundations, abrasion-resistant industrial floors, and sprayed concrete.

Why use it?

It cuts permeability sharply and lifts strength, giving concrete much better resistance to chlorides, sulphates and reinforcement corrosion in aggressive Indian exposure conditions.

How is it applied?

Dosed at roughly 3-15% by weight of cement (commonly 5-10%), batched with the dry materials and almost always paired with a superplasticiser to hold workability.

About Sika SikaFume DS

SikaFume DS is Sika’s densified silica fume, a very fine amorphous silicon dioxide recovered as a by-product of silicon and ferro-silicon alloy production. In its densified form the ultrafine particles are compacted into a free-flowing, bag-friendly powder that batches cleanly on site without the handling problems of loose, low-density microsilica. Chemically it is a highly reactive pozzolan: the primary particles are around a hundred times finer than cement, so they work on concrete at a scale ordinary cement never reaches. That combination of extreme fineness and high reactive silica is what separates a true silica fume from a general mineral filler.

For an engineer specifying durable concrete in India, the appeal is straightforward. Coastal chloride ingress, sulphate-bearing ground, industrial floor abrasion and the corrosion of embedded steel all trace back to a porous, permeable matrix. SikaFume DS attacks that root cause rather than the symptom. It is chloride-free and compatible with ordinary Portland cement, blended cements, fly ash and GGBS, which lets it slot into most existing mix designs as an add-on rather than a redesign. Space Arc Engineering supplies it as an authorised channel across Delhi NCR and pan-India, alongside the superplasticisers and curing products a silica-fume mix needs to perform.

The technical insight

Silica fume works two ways at once, and both matter. First, the pozzolanic reaction: the amorphous SiO2 consumes the free calcium hydroxide (lime) left over from cement hydration and converts it into additional calcium-silicate-hydrate, the C-S-H gel that actually gives concrete its strength. Lime is a weak, soluble, leachable phase; trading it for more C-S-H densifies the paste and removes an easy pathway for aggressive ions. Second, the physical filler effect: particles roughly a hundred times finer than cement pack into the microscopic voids between cement grains and, critically, into the porous interfacial transition zone that hugs every aggregate particle. That zone is normally the weakest, most permeable link in the concrete. Filling and reacting within it tightens the aggregate-paste bond and disconnects the capillary pore network, which is why chloride and sulphate permeability can fall by a large margin while compressive strength climbs. The same fineness that delivers this also demands water, so a superplasticiser is not optional at working dosages — it restores the flow the microsilica would otherwise steal.

Where it is used

  • High-strength concrete for bridge decks and long-span structural elements
  • Marine and coastal construction where chloride resistance governs durability
  • Raft and pile foundations for high-rise buildings needing dense, low-permeability concrete
  • Abrasion-resistant industrial and warehouse floors
  • Sprayed concrete (shotcrete) for tunnels, slopes and repairs, where it reduces rebound
  • Sewage, effluent and marine structures exposed to sulphate and chemical attack
  • Water-retaining structures and reservoirs requiring very low permeability
  • Power, nuclear and heavy-industrial concrete with demanding durability specifications

Key advantages

  • Raises compressive and flexural strength appreciably over an equivalent control mix
  • Sharply reduces permeability to chlorides and sulphates, improving service life
  • Refines the aggregate-paste interfacial zone for a stronger, tighter bond
  • Reduces bleeding and segregation, giving a more cohesive, pumpable mix
  • Slows reinforcement corrosion by cutting the ingress of aggressive ions
  • Chloride-free and compatible with OPC, blended cements, fly ash and GGBS
  • Densified powder form batches cleanly and stores better than undensified microsilica
  • Long 24-month shelf life in sealed, undamaged packaging

Limitations & considerations

  • Effectively requires a superplasticiser at working dosages, or the mix loses workability
  • Higher water demand and cohesion make an unadjusted mix stiff and hard to place
  • Concrete becomes more prone to plastic shrinkage cracking, so early, thorough curing is essential
  • Overdosing gives diminishing returns and can make finishing and pumping harder
  • Correct dosage must be confirmed by trial mixes, not assumed from a rule of thumb
  • It is a supplementary material, not a cement replacement or a standalone repair product

Selection & best practice

Treat SikaFume DS as one component of a designed mix, not a bolt-on. Start from the durability target, fix a dosage in the 3-15% by weight of cement range (5-10% suits most work), and validate it with laboratory and site trial mixes before pouring. Batch the powder with the dry constituents to disperse it evenly, and pair it with a compatible superplasticiser such as a Conplast or Sika range product to recover slump without adding water — keeping the water-binder ratio low is the whole point. Because a silica-fume mix bleeds very little, the surface can dry and craze if left exposed, so protect against plastic shrinkage from the moment of placing and begin curing early and continuously. Store the bags sealed and dry, and use within the 24-month shelf life.

Frequently asked questions

What dosage of SikaFume DS should I use?
It is dosed at roughly 3-15% by weight of cement, with 5-10% covering most high-durability work. There is no universal figure — confirm the exact rate with trial mixes against your strength and permeability targets before production.
Do I need a superplasticiser with it?
In practice, yes. Silica fume is so fine that it raises water demand and stiffens the mix, so a compatible superplasticiser is used to keep the mix workable while holding the water-binder ratio low. Without one, placing and pumping become difficult.
Is SikaFume DS a cement replacement?
No. It is a supplementary cementitious material added on top of the binder to enhance strength and durability, not a substitute for cement. It works alongside OPC, blended cements, fly ash and GGBS.
How much does it actually improve durability?
By consuming free lime and filling the pore network it substantially lowers permeability to chlorides and sulphates and raises strength. The real gain depends on dosage, water-binder ratio and curing, which is why trial mixes matter.
What pack sizes and shelf life does it have?
It is supplied in 15 kg and 25 kg bags and, kept sealed and dry, has a shelf life of about 24 months from production. Damaged or opened bags that have taken up moisture should not be used.
Does curing need special attention?
Yes. A silica-fume mix bleeds very little, so the surface can dry out and crack if exposed. Protect against plastic shrinkage immediately after placing and start curing early and continuously for the best result.

How we position Sika SikaFume DS

SikaFume DS sits within Sika’s concrete durability range and works hand in glove with a superplasticiser — pair it with a high-range water reducer from the Sika admixture line to recover workability at higher dosages. Where a project is built around Fosroc, the equivalent workflow uses Fosroc Conplast SP430 as the superplasticiser and, for shrinkage-compensated repair rather than fresh structural concrete, the Renderoc microconcrete range. From our own shelves, contractors typically specify it alongside a curing compound and, on marine or repair work, an anti-corrosion or protective coating to complete the durability system rather than relying on the silica fume alone.

Preferred brand · Fosroc equivalent

Fosroc Conplast SP430 — Not a silica-fume substitute but the natural partner on a Fosroc-based mix — this superplasticiser restores the workability a high silica-fume dosage removes while keeping the water-binder ratio low.
