What is it?

A single-component, waterborne acrylic/polyurethane copolymer dispersion coating that dries to a seamless, semi-gloss white film with USFDA 175.300 food-grade certification from CFTRI, Mysore.

Where is it used?

Internal walls and ceilings in pharmaceutical clean rooms, food and beverage plants, commercial kitchens, hospitals, healthcare facilities and other hygiene-critical interiors.

Why use it?

It creates a hard-wearing, easy-clean hygienic barrier that withstands repeated washdowns with mild detergents while staying low-odour and water-based, so occupied areas can be recoated with minimal disruption.

How is it applied?

Roll, brush or airless-spray one priming coat (diluted with 10% clean water) followed by one or two neat top coats onto a sound, damp-free substrate; two coats are achievable in a single working day.

About Sika Sikagard PU UR (W)

Sikagard PU UR (W) is Sika’s waterborne answer to a recurring problem on Indian projects: how to give an interior wall or ceiling a genuinely hygienic, wipe-clean finish without dragging solvent smell, long shutdowns or a multi-part mixing routine onto site. It is a single-component, coloured, modified polyurethane-dispersion coating that carries an organic in-film preservative and cures to a seamless, semi-gloss white surface. Because it is water-based and low-odour, it suits occupied and sensitive environments where solvented systems are hard to justify, and the film itself is food-grade certified to USFDA 175.300 (assessed by CFTRI, Mysore) for indirect food-contact areas.

The coating bonds to a wide spread of interior substrates: concrete, brick and blockwork, cement-based and gypsum surfaces, metal, timber, tiles and even plastic. That versatility makes it a practical single specification across a whole facility rather than a patchwork of different wall paints. Applied as a diluted primer plus neat top coats, it builds a continuous, elastomeric membrane roughly 100-110 microns thick over two coats. For Delhi NCR and Pan-India specifiers, its appeal is straightforward: a fast-drying, easy-clean hygienic coating that goes down with ordinary rollers, brushes or spray, cleans up with water, and stands up to the daily wash-down routines that clean rooms and kitchens demand.

The technical insight

The performance comes from the polyurethane dispersion chemistry rather than a chemical mix on site. As the waterborne acrylic/polyurethane copolymer dries, the individual polymer particles coalesce into one continuous, cross-linked film with no seams or laps for bacteria, dirt or moisture to lodge in. That film is deliberately elastomeric, with elongation at break exceeding 100 percent, so it flexes with minor substrate movement and resists the cracking and flaking that plain emulsion paints suffer under repeated cleaning. A tensile adhesion above 1.5 MPa on concrete (EN 1542) keeps it locked to the wall, while the organic in-film preservative suppresses microbial growth within the coating itself. The relatively low water-vapour transmission (~32 g/m²/24h) and dense semi-gloss surface mean spills and detergents sit on top and wipe away rather than soaking in, which is exactly what makes the finish both hygienic and durable over years of scrubbing.

Where it is used

  • Seal coating for internal walls and ceilings in pharmaceutical clean rooms and cGMP suites
  • Food and beverage processing plants, dairies, breweries and cold-chain interiors
  • Commercial and institutional kitchens where daily detergent wash-downs are routine
  • Hospital wards, operating-theatre corridors and other healthcare facilities
  • Laboratories, packaging halls and other hygiene-controlled interiors
  • Leisure centres, prisons and institutional buildings needing a washable wall finish
  • Application over concrete, brick, block, cement render, gypsum, metal, timber, tile and plastic
  • Maintenance or refresh layer over existing sound coatings

Key advantages

  • Single-component and water-based: no on-site mixing ratios, low odour and easy water clean-up of tools
  • Food-grade certified to USFDA 175.300 (CFTRI, Mysore) for indirect food-contact areas
  • Fast drying, allowing two coats in one working day and quicker room turnaround
  • Seamless, semi-gloss, easy-clean finish that resists repeated washing with mild detergents
  • Elastomeric film (elongation >100%) that resists cracking and flaking under cleaning stress
  • Strong adhesion (>1.5 MPa on concrete, EN 1542) across many interior substrates
  • Good opacity and hiding power for uniform coverage
  • In-film preservative helps protect the coating against microbial growth

Limitations & considerations

  • Interior use for walls and ceilings; not a floor coating or a system for heavy foot/traffic abrasion
  • Supplied in white only, so bespoke colour matching is not offered in this grade
  • Application window is +15 C to +30 C with relative humidity 80% max, and the substrate must stay at least 3 C above dew point to avoid blooming
  • Substrate must be visibly damp-free (max 18% wood-moisture equivalent) with no rising moisture, so it does not fix underlying damp problems
  • Limited shelf life of 6 months from production, requiring disciplined stock rotation
  • Not intended for continuous chemical immersion or aggressive chemical-contact duty

Selection & best practice

Success hinges on substrate preparation and site conditions. The wall or ceiling must be sound, clean, dry and free of dirt, oil, laitance, mould, grease and old friable coatings; remove loose material by brush and vacuum, and repair spalled or damaged masonry with compatible materials before coating. Always confirm substrate moisture, relative humidity and dew point on the day, and keep the substrate at least 3 C above dew point to prevent condensation blooming. Start with the priming coat of Sikagard PU UR (W) diluted with 10% clean water, applied by good-quality sponge roller, brush or airless spray at around 0.15-0.20 kg/m². Follow with neat top coats at roughly 0.10-0.12 kg/m² per coat to build a two-coat dry film of about 100-110 microns. Respect the overcoat window (from 8 hours minimum at +20 C, 6 hours at +30 C, up to 48 hours maximum) so successive coats bond properly, and clean all tools with water immediately after use before the material hardens.

Frequently asked questions

Is Sikagard PU UR (W) safe for food-contact and pharma environments?
Yes. The cured film is food-grade certified to USFDA 175.300 (assessed by CFTRI, Mysore) for indirect food-contact areas, and it carries an in-film preservative, which is why it is widely specified for food, beverage and pharmaceutical clean-room walls and ceilings.
Can it be used on floors?
No. It is a wall and ceiling seal coating, not a flooring system. For hard-wearing hygienic floors you would use a PU or epoxy floor screed or self-levelling system instead; talk to us about matching the walls and floor across the same facility.
How much do I need per coat and how many coats?
Budget roughly 0.15-0.20 kg/m² for the diluted priming coat and 0.10-0.12 kg/m² per neat top coat, giving a two-coat dry film of about 100-110 microns. These are theoretical figures, so allow extra for surface porosity, profile and wastage.
Do I need to mix anything or add a hardener?
No. It is a genuinely single-component, ready-to-use coating. The only addition is 10% clean water to thin the priming coat; the top coats go on neat. Tools clean up with water while the material is still wet.
What substrates does it stick to?
It bonds to concrete, brick and blockwork, cement-based renders, gypsum, metal, timber, tiles and plastic, provided the surface is sound, clean and visibly damp-free. That range lets you specify one coating across an entire interior.
What conditions do I need on site during application?
Apply between +15 C and +30 C with relative humidity no higher than 80%, and keep the substrate at least 3 C above the dew point to avoid condensation blooming. The substrate must be damp-free with no rising moisture; if there is underlying damp, that has to be resolved first.
