What is it?

A single-component, polymer-modified cementitious tile adhesive from STP, classified C2TES1 to EN 12004 and IS 15477 Type 4 — the deformable (S1) grade that absorbs substrate movement.

Where is it used?

External facades, terraces, swimming pools, wet areas, underfloor-heated floors and high-traffic commercial zones where large vitrified, ceramic, granite or marble units are fixed.

Why use it?

Its deformability and high polymer content let it hold heavy, non-porous, large-format tiles on moving or thermally stressed backgrounds where an ordinary C1 adhesive would debond.

How is it applied?

Mixed with clean water to a lump-free paste, combed onto the substrate with a notched trowel at 2-15 mm bed, then the tile is pressed and adjusted within the open time.

About STP ShaliTile Fix 400

STP ShaliTile Fix 400 is the deformable, high-performance grade in STP Limited’s ShaliTile adhesive family, aimed squarely at the tiling situations that trip up cheaper products: 600×600 mm and larger vitrified panels, dense porcelain and natural stone, and backgrounds that expand, contract or vibrate. It arrives as a single-component grey powder — a blend of cement, closely graded silica and polymer additives — that needs only clean water on site. Once mixed it develops the creamy, non-slump consistency an applicator wants for vertical work, and it carries a C2TES1 rating under EN 12004 (and IS 15477 Type 4), meaning improved bond, extended open time, slip resistance and, critically, S1 deformability.

For Space Arc, this is a product we position where movement is the real design problem, not just adhesion. A tiled terrace baking in the sun, a facade running floor to floor, a heated screed cycling through temperatures, or a low-porosity porcelain slab on a young concrete slab — all of these load the adhesive bed with shear and peel stress. ShaliTile Fix 400’s flexible, resin-rich matrix flexes rather than cracks, which is what keeps the finish intact over years. We supply it across Delhi NCR and Pan-India as an authorised STP channel, and back it with site guidance so the specified performance actually reaches the wall or floor.

The technical insight

The behaviour that separates Fix 400 from a basic sand-cement or C1 adhesive comes from its polymer chemistry. A plain cementitious adhesive relies almost entirely on mechanical keying and cement hydration — fine on porous ceramic, but a poor match for dense vitrified tiles and stone that give the paste almost nothing to grip. Fix 400’s redispersible polymers form a continuous film through the hardened mortar that bonds chemically to those low-porosity backs, lifting tensile adhesion to roughly 1.80 N/mm2 dry and holding around 1.34 N/mm2 even after water immersion — comfortably past the 1.0 N/mm2 C2 threshold. The same polymer network is what makes the bed deformable: instead of a brittle, rigid layer, you get an elastic film (transverse deformation about 2.72 mm, meeting the S1 class) that stretches and relaxes as the tile and substrate move at different rates under thermal or structural load. That elasticity is why it survives on terraces, facades and heated floors where a rigid adhesive would fatigue and let go at the corners.

Where it is used

  • Fixing large-format vitrified and porcelain tiles (600×600 mm and above) on floors and walls
  • External facade and elevation cladding with tiles or natural stone
  • Terraces, balconies and podium decks exposed to thermal cycling
  • Swimming pools, water tanks and other continuously wet areas
  • Tile-over-tile renovation where removing the old finish is impractical
  • Underfloor-heated screeds and floors subject to temperature movement
  • Granite, marble and engineered stone on concrete or plastered backgrounds
  • High-traffic commercial floors — malls, lobbies, airports and showrooms

Key advantages

  • Deformable S1 bed absorbs thermal and structural movement instead of cracking
  • C2TES1 performance to EN 12004 and IS 15477 Type 4 — bonds dense, non-porous tiles
  • High tensile adhesion (~1.80 N/mm2 dry, ~1.34 N/mm2 after water immersion)
  • Extended open time gives crews room to lay and true up large panels
  • Non-slip / non-sag consistency suits vertical and overhead work without battens
  • Single-component — only clean water on site, no separate liquid polymer to dose
  • Suitable for interior and exterior, wet and dry, wall and floor in one product
  • Bed range of 2-15 mm accommodates minor substrate undulation

Limitations & considerations

  • It is a deformable S1, not an S2 highly-deformable grade — extreme-movement joints and certain metal or fibre-cement backgrounds may need a higher class
  • Not a substitute for structural movement joints; expansion and perimeter joints must still be designed and carried through the tiling
  • Cementitious and alkaline — pot life and open time shorten in hot, dry or windy conditions, so batches must be sized to what the crew can lay
  • Wet performance depends on correct water dosage; over-watering to improve workability will reduce bond strength
  • Substrate must be sound, cured, clean and free of laitance, dust and curing compounds — it will not rescue a weak or contaminated background
  • Very large or heavy stone on facades may still require mechanical anchoring or back-buttering per the designer’s assessment

Selection & best practice

Prepare a sound, clean, dimensionally stable substrate — new concrete and plaster should be adequately cured, and all dust, oil, laitance and curing compound removed. Dampen very absorbent backgrounds without leaving free water. Add the powder to clean water (roughly a 1:4 ratio by volume — about two-thirds of the water first), mix mechanically with a slow-speed paddle to a smooth, lump-free paste, and let it stand for a few minutes before a brief re-mix. Comb onto the substrate with a notched trowel sized to the tile, working only the area you can cover within the open time, and for large-format or heavy units also back-butter to achieve near-full contact. Press and twist each tile firmly to collapse the ribs, check bedding by lifting an occasional tile, and true up before the adhesive skins over. Keep expansion, movement and perimeter joints clear and continuous. Grout only after the adhesive has set — typically leave it undisturbed for around 24 hours before grouting or trafficking, longer in cool or damp conditions.

Industry use cases

Commercial facades

Fixing porcelain and stone cladding on multi-storey elevations where floor-to-floor thermal movement demands a deformable bed.

Hospitality & retail

Large-format vitrified floors in hotel lobbies, malls and showrooms that must stay crack-free under continuous foot traffic.

Water-retaining & wet areas

Swimming pools, decks and bathrooms where sustained wet exposure needs an adhesive that holds bond after immersion.

Underfloor-heated screeds and tile-over-tile refurbishments where the substrate moves or offers low porosity for keying.

Frequently asked questions

What does the C2TES1 rating on ShaliTile Fix 400 actually mean?
Under EN 12004 it is a cementitious (C) adhesive with improved bond and class 2 performance, T for non-slip, E for extended open time, and S1 for deformability. In plain terms: it grips dense tiles, gives you time to lay them, doesn’t sag on walls, and flexes with a moving substrate.
Can I use it for external facade cladding and large-format tiles?
Yes — that is exactly its target. The deformable S1 bed and high polymer content are designed for large-format vitrified panels and stone on facades, terraces and other thermally stressed exteriors. Very heavy stone units may still need mechanical support as advised by the designer.
How much area does a 20 kg bag cover?
Roughly 7-7.5 m2 at a 2 mm bed. Real coverage depends on trowel notch size, substrate flatness and whether you back-butter, so treat this as a planning figure and confirm with a site trial.
Does it work on non-porous porcelain and vitrified tiles?
Yes. Being a C2 polymer-modified adhesive, it forms chemical adhesion to low-porosity backs where an ordinary C1 or sand-cement mix would struggle. It is one of the reasons the product is specified for vitrified and porcelain work.
Do I still need movement joints if the adhesive is deformable?
Yes. Deformability handles differential movement within the bed, but it does not replace designed expansion, movement and perimeter joints — those must still be provided and carried through the tiling to control larger structural movement.
How long before I can grout or walk on the tiles?
Typically leave the tiling undisturbed for about 24 hours before grouting or light traffic, extending this in cool or humid conditions. Always confirm against the current STP technical data sheet for the site temperature.

How we position STP ShaliTile Fix 400

ShaliTile Fix 400 sits at the deformable end of STP’s ShaliTile range — a step up from the standard-duty ShaliTile Fix grades used for small-format interior ceramic on stable backgrounds, and the product we reach for whenever movement, wet exposure or large-format non-porous tiles are in play. Where movement is even more severe — think metal decks, fibre-cement or highly dynamic joints — a highly-deformable S2 adhesive would be the correct specification, and we can advise on the right STP grade for that. Pair it with STP’s ShaliTile epoxy or cementitious grout to complete a fully STP-warranted tiling system, and for the waterproofing layer beneath pools, terraces and wet areas we can specify from STP’s ShaliSeal / Shalitex membrane range or an equivalent system from our Dr. Fixit or Fosroc lines depending on the substrate and warranty required. As an authorised STP distributor and applicator, Space Arc supplies Fix 400 with technical selection support so the adhesive, grout and waterproofing are matched rather than mixed by chance.
