Product Overview
Nitobond SBR is a styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) latex emulsion used in two ways in concrete repair and construction: first as a bonding agent slurry (mixed with OPC cement to form a thick slurry applied to the prepared substrate before applying the repair mortar), and second as a polymer admixture added to the cement gauging water of repair mortars, cementitious overlays, and screeds to improve adhesion, flexibility, and durability. When used as a bonding slurry, Nitobond SBR/cement mixture is brushed onto the prepared concrete substrate and the repair mortar applied while the slurry is still green and tacky — providing a chemical and mechanical bond between the old substrate and the new repair mortar. When used as an admixture in the mortar mix, Nitobond SBR improves the flexibility, impact resistance, and durability of the cured mortar and significantly increases its bond strength to the substrate. It is compatible with all OPC-based repair mortars and cementitious systems. Nitobond SBR is one of the most widely used polymer admixtures in the Indian construction chemicals market for repair and rehabilitation work. Should Nitobond SBR or Nitobond EP be used as a bonding agent for concrete repair?
Both are suitable bonding agents, but they serve different performance requirements. Nitobond SBR bonding slurry is a cementitious system — it is economical and adequate for most standard repair mortar applications. Nitobond EP (epoxy bonding agent) provides much higher pull-off bond strength and is specified for demanding structural repairs, thin overlays, or when the repair specification requires a minimum bond strength above what SBR can achieve. For most general patch repair and overlay work, SBR is cost-effective. For high-specification structural repairs, use Nitobond EP.
Can Nitobond SBR be used as a waterproofing admixture?
Yes. Nitobond SBR reduces the water permeability of cementitious mortars and slurries when used as a polymer admixture. This makes SBR-modified cementitious slurries useful for surface waterproofing applications (like basement negative-side brush-applied waterproof coats), though they are not as flexible or as durable under hydrostatic pressure as dedicated two-component polymer modified membranes like Brushbond TGP. For critical waterproofing, use dedicated products.
What is the typical dosage of Nitobond SBR as a polymer admixture?
When used as a polymer admixture in cement-based mortars or screeds, Nitobond SBR is typically added at 10 to 15% by weight of cement (i.e., 10 to 15 litres of SBR per 100 kg cement). The SBR replaces part of the gauging water in the mortar mix — adjust water accordingly to maintain the correct consistency. Higher dosages are used for special waterproof or high-flexibility applications.
